This time, it's our brainpower. Or rather, our lack thereof. Bakersfield ranked sixth weakest in the country -- doh! Worse than Fresno! -- for gray-matter accomplishment.

The brainpower study, compiled by the American City Business Journals newspaper chain, used 2003 educational statistics from a federal Census Bureau program called the American Community Survey. The survey gathers data every year about the country's major metro areas.
Boulder, Colo., thick with pine trees and college degrees, topped the list. The Golden State's San Francisco and San Jose made the Top 10.
On the degree-lite end, McAllen, Texas scored a dubious first place. California's Central Valley held five spots, with Stockton and Modesto ranking on either side of Bakersfield. Fresno squeaked in at No. 10.
