NYT- Saddam Trial Could Begin in Months

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After 17 months in detention, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein may be about to face trial.

Iraq's planning minister, Barham Salih, said Friday the chief justice of the special tribunal in charge of prosecution in Baghdad had told him that ''within the next few months Saddam Hussein could be brought before the court.''

After a long search, U.S. forces captured Saddam in December 2003 hiding in a concealed hole near his hometown of Tikrit, 80 miles north of Baghdad.

A trial date has not been set.

Iraq's planning minster says he's gotten word from the chief justice in Baghdad who oversees a special tribunal that Saddam could be brought before the court "within the next few months."

Barham Salih made the announcement during a news conference with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington.

6. Does this explain the Saddam beefcake photos?

Bush and his loyal Iraqi minions want to demean Hussein in the eyes of his countrymen. Personal modesty is an important virtue in Muslim cultures, and flouting photos like this would normally be very insulting to Saddam. That would fit in with a trial, since they would want to lay the groundwork for the idea that they can belittle him at will.

It may backfire, though. Saddam looked pretty good for a guy his age in jail. I hope I can manage to look like that when I reach that age. The Iraqi resistance may actually be emboldened, if anything.
