GOP races to DeLay's defense
GOP races to DeLay's defense
Rep. Tom Feeney helps lead a push to raise cash for the colleague who funded several Florida legislators.

By Tamara Lytle Washington Bureau Chief | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted May 8, 2005

WASHINGTON -- There's not much middle ground here when the discussion turns to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. He's either a man seriously lacking in ethics or a conservative hero who deserves to be honored.

Florida's GOP lawmakers, many of whom benefited financially from DeLay, have fallen into the latter camp, with Rep. Tom Feeney among those leading the charge to defend their leader.

The Oviedo Republican and others in the delegation have donated thousands of dollars to the majority leader's legal-defense fund that will help pay to fight allegations he broke House rules by accepting travel from a lobbyist. And Tuesday night, Feeney will join other conservatives here at a $250-per-person dinner on DeLay's behalf.
(snip)

"It's usually a sign you're in deep trouble," scholar Norm Ornstein of the think tank American Enterprise Institute said of the dinner. "They wouldn't do this if it was just a few pebbles."
(snip/...)

1. Tom Feeney is an example of a Tom DeLay wanna-be....
...and a complete disgrace as an elected official from Florida. I hope that both Toms go down in flames.

6. I've heard alot about what a rightwing nutjob this Feeney is
along with David Weldon(sp?), another of his ilk from the same area. The Florida east coast is chock-full of decent and smart people - how do radical misfits like this get elected?

2. "GOP lawmakers, many of whom benefited financially from DeLay..."
Well that is pretty much laying it out in the open.

Motivated for fear of being caught up in the scandal and worried about losing financing support if TD goes down.

The GOP gains friends the old-fashioned way...they BUY them.

5. RE: GOP races to DeLay's defense
I'm visualizing a scene from a 1950's Western:

"Circle the wagons, boys... them liberal injuns are are fixin' to scalp us!"

Oh yes, indeed!
