<snip>

"Fourteen reputed mob members and associates have been indicted on charges of plotting at least 18 murders, some going back as far as 1970, federal officials announced Monday.
Those indicted include Joey "The Clown" Lombardo, long known as one of the top leaders of organized crime in the Chicago area.

The previously unsolved murders included those of the mob's top man in Las Vegas, Tony Spilotro, and his brother, Michael, who were buried alive in an Indiana cornfield, according to the nine-count indictment."

<snip>

"Tony the Ant" Spilotro, a Chicago mob enforcer, ruled Las Vegas in the 1970s and early 1980s. Spilotro, 48, and brother Michael, 41, Michael, were last seen alive June 14, 1986. Their badly beaten bodies were found buried in an Indiana field eight days later.

Joe Pesci played a character based on Spilotro in the 1995 movie "Casino."

The U.S. attorney's office said in a statement that the indictments were the result of a long-standing investigation dubbed "Operation Family Secrets," which was aimed at clearing unsolved mob hits."

3. The movie left out a disgusting detail from their deaths
Or so that is the word on the street.

My old roommate went to HS with Tony Spilatro's daughter. He said the poor girl was gorgeous but could not get a date because everyone was afraid.

4. I thought Al Tacco was convicted for his part in the murder
In a book I read recently about mob women there was a whole chapter about how Betty Tacco had to go pick her husband up after he had finished burying Spilatro. The two guys he was burying the bodies with ran off and left him in the field, reminded me of that scene in the Sopranos when Paulie gets left behind dumping a body in the Pine Barrens.

6. FBI holds Chicago mobsters over 20 murders

By Patrick Sawer, Evening Standard
26 April 2005

Several Chicago mobsters thought to be responsible for nearly 20 unsolved murders dating back to the Seventies have been held by the FBI.

The operation saw the most organised-crime figures ever charged in a single case in Chicago, and came after one of the alleged gangsters gave evidence against his own brother.

Nick Calabrese, 62, secretly recorded his 68- year- old brother Frank talking about the Mafia's involvement in the killings.
One lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, said: "Today the Outfit takes a hit." The "Operation Family Secrets" charges include 18 of murder. Two former Chicago law enforcement officials are among the 14 people identified.
