Voters in New York state are increasingly unhappy with the job President Bush is doing, and he
now trails several Democratic presidential contenders in the latest poll, including retired General
Wesley Clark.
The Quinnipiac University poll out today shows Bush's approval rating falling to its lowest rating
ever -- 42 percent -- among registered voters in New York state. That compares to his 52
percent approval rating in a Quinnipiac poll in late June. More...

WASHINGTON — Is retired Gen. Wesley Clark, the
former NATO
supreme allied commander, an erratic liar? He
is if you believe the
spin coming out of the conservative hit
machines that cranked into
action as soon as Clark announced his intention
to run for president
as a Democrat.

Success in politics sometimes comes down to
which side can tell the
most compelling story — and, even more
important, which side can
tell it first.

That simple truth has triggered a manic,
win-at-all-costs drive to
"define" Clark in the worst terms possible so
that he won't be able to
knock the president out of the White House next
November. In his
newsletter last week, Washington's highly
respected political
handicapper Charlie Cook correctly noted that
"for the White House,
it is particularly important that Clark's
credibility be impeached as
soon as possible." The White House and its
media allies clearly agree.

Before Clark's entry into the race a little
more than a week ago, there
were nine other candidates in the Democratic
field. But none had
garnered even a fraction of the invective Clark
is now receiving — not
even former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, a
front-running candidate
whose politics put him decidedly at odds with
President Bush.

in this same poll. All of our candidates--Clark, Dean, Gephardt, Lieberman, and Kerry beat Bush from anywhere from 2-7 points.

Dean has also come on strong since the last Quinnipiac poll in NY where he was at 9%--a gain of 8-points since June.

Gen. Wesley Clark tops Bush in New York 48 -- 41 percent in the 2004 face-off. Other Democratic contenders have gained on Bush since the June 26 survey:

Sen. Hillary Clinton beats Bush 51 -- 43 percent, compared to a 47 -- 47 tie June 26;
Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman tops Bush 49 - 42 percent, a reversal of Bush's 49 -- 43 percent lead;
Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry tops Bush 48 -- 43 percent, reversing Bush's 48 -- 43 percent lead;
Missouri Congressman Richard Gephardt gets 46 percent to Bush's 44 percent, a tie and a slip from Bush's 49 -- 43 percent lead;

Looks like 5 can all beat Bush at this point (Clinton isn't running). Who knows, maybe even Kucinich beats Bush. I could vote for him. Lots of time left and many debates, and much more bad economic news in the next year to sink Bush.

I suppose a more useful poll might be who likely Democratic primary voters would vote for. All can beat Bush, but who will get the chance?

This poll is great news - it shows all of the major Democratic candidates beating Bush. I know it is New York, a state Gore won with over 60%, but a few months ago even the Gore states were looking vulnerable, so this is a good sign.
