AP Sues Government, Saying Documents From Guantanamo Detainee Hearings of 'urgent Concern'
By Larry Neumeister
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Government documents related to military hearings for Guantanamo Bay detainees are of "urgent concern" to the public and should be released, according to a lawsuit filed by The Associated Press against the Defense Department.
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in federal court, stated AP has been able to report only anecdotally on 558 tribunals conducted since August to let detainees challenge their incarceration at the Cuban base. The news agency said the proceedings were "unquestionably of great interest to the public."

It asked the court to order the government to turn over transcripts of all Guantanamo detainees' testimony, along with written statements by the detainees and any documents they have submitted.

The news agency submitted a Freedom of Information Act request in the fall, but it said the Defense Department has refused to provide the documents and has not processed the company's appeal of the government's failure to act.

3. Still, nice to see them acting like the ACLU... somewhat, finally.

6. I've gone around the last bend.
Because, all I see here is a power struggle, not a real desire to inform the country. I notice they don't seem to be asking for the videos or in any way trying to determine what is still going on at Gitmo -- which would seem to me a more urgent concern.

I think we'll see many more of these turf wars as the Repugnicans turn on each other. That's probably a good thing -- as in this instant.

8. I feel ashamed to be thinking this way. Well, it's been more
than four years of this toxicity.

Thanks, Hissyspit, for posting this.

4. The AP is biting the hand that feeds them?
Surprise, surprise, I wonder why they just don't make it up and print it? Why do they care? Hmmm, something wicked this way comes.

5. FWIW, the AP (associated press) is driven by its membership
They are beholden to its various member newspapers. At times, this makes them seem to be a govt. mouthpiece, and at times the opposite. The reason is they are a wire service that caters to a wide variety of clients, all of whom make requests and give constant feedback on the product. so, there are some conservative and some liberal papers, so their requests and the stories they consume vary.
they are a not-for-profit enterprise (different than a nonprofit) and therefore they survive by member subscriptions.
