Senator likens stem-cell study to Holocaust
OLYMPIA -- A Republican state senator from Yakima reignited a controversy yesterday by comparing stem-cell research to the Holocaust, just weeks after House Republicans apologized for making a similar remark.
....
"Public policy said those people should be destroyed," Deccio said. "We are talking about the same thing. ... Human life begins with an embryo and that's what we are talking about here."
....
The bill in question, House Bill 1269, would create Human Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee to develop guidelines for conducting research on human embryonic stem cells, which could be taken from unused embryos resulting from in vitro fertilization.

The bill would also require health care providers to inform fertility treatment patients of their options regarding the disposal of unused embryos.

Although Republicans have dubbed it the "human cloning" bill, the proposal outlaws cloning or attempted reproductive cloning of a human being.

2. I wish we could put these neo-Christian politicians in a time machine
And send them back to the 9th century where the knowledge of science suits their beliefs.

Now I think I understand how the crusades started.
An ancestor of Deccio probably lit the fire that destroyed the Great Libraries at Alexandria.

4. Life does not begin with the embryo, it starts much sooner than...
....that:

"Every sperm is sacred
Every sperm is great
If a sperm gets wasted
God gets quite irate."

5. Some Christian Family Organization
is calling for the creation of a National Frozen Embryo Adoption Bank so these "tiny babies" can be implanted in the somebody else and saved. Um, I assume they mean this would not be voluntary. The couple would have to surrender their embryos for this against their will? Do these people really think there are somewhere around 400,000 (approx. number of frozen embryos) women willing to have somebody else's embryo implanted in them?

These people are really getting bizarre beyond belief.

6. May I respectfully suggest that the good Senator be the first
to volunteer as a male surrogate parent. Now that would be groundbreaking research of great significance. If he could be the first male to carry a fetus to term, he may be less likely to feel that it is his perogative to tell women what they can do with their bodies.

7. Has this guy come out against in vitro fertilization?
Anyone know? Because if he hasn't, he's a hypocrite.

Consistency would require that Deccio believe that parents who only implant one or two of their IVF embryos are "Hitlers", since the unimplanted embryos are often discarded.

But I'll bet he doesn't say that, because IVF is very popular.

9. Makes you wonder
Do these people really not understand what the Holocaust was? I see people throw this word and genocide around and really have no clue what either mean. It is very disheartening and disgusting. To compare these two things is beyond pale!

10. The thing to do
is let women volunteer to donate their embryos to research, or to the frozen embryo adoption bank, or to be destroyed.

If I had to undergo fetility counseling, god forbid, I'd ba happy to let the other embryos go to save lives instead of languishing in the freezer like freezer burned tofu ice cream.

12. Choice
like everything else it is about choice - not FORCED to do one thing or another. Let the couple decide for themselves what they want to do with the excess embryos.

14. Questions to RW freak lurkers
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 07:53 PM by Rex
What about fertilized eggs that don't attach to the woman's fallopian tube? When they get swept out with other bodily fluids, is it murder? If it is murder than how can you blame the woman, she has no control over the situation, but God does - she might have free will, but God controls everything else! So shouldn't we be blaming God for not nudging that little critter into the wall of her uterus? Then again how can it be murder if God knew it would happen, but didn't try and save that human life-zygote? Maybe he knew it would grow up to be a serial killer! Someone remind Deccio that God moves in mysterious ways and told me to tell him to stfu, go back to school, and get that GED!

...it doesn't attach to the fallopian tube, either. It implants in the uterine wall.

15. He wouldn't if HE HAD ms.
This is a slap in the face for millions and millions of sick people. Try being sick, Mr.Republican, and then see how you feel about your lie. Because it IS a lie. You shithole. As if it takes the death of a child in order to get stem cells. BS alert.

If only the human race would take a little effort to be honest, and to try and elevate the discourse. Can we not transcend out of the muck of lies, greed, fear?

Poor Republicans, they know not their stupidity.

20. I agree if this
asshole had to live one day like millions of chronically ill patients do then he might have a clue.
Why is he allowed to hold office?
People like this never realize until it hits close to home.

religiously bat-shit insane, you shouldn't be allowed to hold public office.

17. Oh God! Are we arguing this again?!
Taking stem-cells from aborted fetuses and systematically killing an entire race is not the same! To say so is an enormous insult to those who have lost loved ones to the Holocaust. I'd bet this self-righteous state senator would push his way up to the front of the line to stone some 'homo's'. Come on Yakima, you can do much better than electing zealots who can't even realize when an argument has already been lost.
