New Jersey officials are investigating whether former city top cop Bernard Kerik tried to help a contractor in its battles with regulators who believed the company was controlled by organized crime.
The probe is also exploring if the Clifton, N.J.-based construction company, Interstate Industrial, was involved in a 1999 renovation of Kerik's apartment or paid him in other ways.
Interstate was under investigation by two city agencies, the Department of Investigation and the Trade Waste Commission, at the same time New Jersey gaming authorities were trying to determine if the firm was fit to build in Atlantic City.
The state's Division of Gaming Enforcement has subpoenaed Kerik for all records related to the purchase and renovation of his Riverdale apartment.
The investigators are also seeking any communications Kerik had with Interstate regarding the apartment, as well as records of any money Kerik got from the company's owners, Frank and Peter DiTomasso.
