NLRB will decide the fate of new Teamsters vote (MI / nurses)
Management says eligibility is a concern
By KEITH MATHENY
Record-Eagle staff writer

PETOSKEY - A National Labor Relations Board hearing here Wednesday will help determine whether Northern Michigan Hospital nurses will again vote on Teamsters union representation.

Teamsters Local 406 officials contend that more than 30 percent of the hospital's nurses, including some on strike for nearly 29 months, submitted signed cards seeking another vote on the union's status as their bargaining agent.

The Teamsters were installed by a vote of NMH nurses in 2001, and reaffirmed in a 2003 election. Hospital management stopped negotiating with the union in December, when they said they received a petition signed by a majority of NMH nurses stating they no longer wanted the Teamsters.

Union officials and striking nurses have expressed concerns about the petition and how it was gathered, and said no one outside hospital management has scrutinized it. <snip>
