MOUNT VERNON — Unhappy with the contract proposed by management, a crowd of about 200 union members gathered outside The Dan Emmett Conference Center on Wednesday, while contract negotiations between union representatives and members of Rolls-Royce management took place inside.
Before negotiations began, Andy Campbell, president of IAMAW Local Lodge 90, spoke to the crowd and encouraged unity among the members. He also told members to follow the rules and to avoid resorting to name-calling. Campbell and other union representatives then entered the conference center, while union members waited outside for members of management to come over from their Dan Emmett hotel suite, where they had gathered. <snip>
After the meeting, Ron Hendrick, chief steward at Rolls-Royce, said .. management “shoved the last contract down our throats” in 2002, and was doing the same now. While the company had made large profits since then, Hendrick added, it offered union workers only modest increases in wages, increases that did not keep up with increases in the cost of living. <snip>
“They’re getting better raises than we are; 2.5 percent of $100,000 is better than 2.5 percent of $28,000,” Hendrick said. <snip>
