Firm issues release (NEGATIVE) on anthrax scare (at Pentagon in March)

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) - The company that turned up a positive test for anthrax at the Pentagon earlier this month said Wednesday it appears the sample wasn't contaminated.

Commonwealth Biotechnologies (CBTE: news, chart, profile) said it is unclear whether the accuracy of the sample that caused the evacuation of 300 people March 14 at the Defense Department will ever be determined. The company said it has found no evidence of contamination of the sample.

Commonwealth's sample, first taken March 10, detected a form of anthrax in a filter in the Pentagon's mail-sorting facility. Subsequent tests turned up no signs of anthrax.

"Unfortunately, the source of the positive sample may never be known with certainty," Chief Executive Dr. Robert B. Harris said. "In light of the outcome of our internal review stands behind the results it provided."
