Greenspan, Clinton Clash on Forecasts (Hillary lands a left hook)
Greenspan, Clinton Clash on Forecasts

16 minutes ago Business - AP

By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON - Alan Greenspan (news - web sites) and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (news - web sites) clashed briefly Tuesday over rosy surplus forecasts the Federal Reserve (news - web sites) Chairman relied on to support President President Bush (news - web sites)'s 2001 tax cuts, estimates that turned out to be considerably off the mark.

"It turns out that we were all wrong," Greenspan conceded at a Senate hearing.

"Just for the record, we were not all wrong, but many people were wrong," Clinton, D-N.Y., quickly shot back.

20. Hillary does SOMETHING right.
I'm sick of being dragged down with the rest of them. Why should DEMS pay for REPUG errors... Seriously, let the cons have their own country, we'd be better off

4. Oh this is nice - Alan G recommends "lockbox"
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 02:05 PM by dave29
Greenspan also suggested resurrecting the notion of sealing off Social Security revenues from other uses. Last year Social Security tax revenues plus interest exceeded benefits by about $150 billion, he said.

"We need, in effect, to make the phantom `lock-boxes' around the trust fund real," he said.

Al Gore, you win again and again, if only we could have stopped them from stealing victory from you.

15. She Did Vote Against Cloture For The Moral Bankruptcy Bill
And she didn't vote for the bankruptcy bill itself since her husband was in the hospital, so she deserves some leeway.

28. No, he can only be blamed for RE-nominating
the Friedman wannabe. Reagan and his cronies get the blame for foisting him on the American public in the first place, and both Bushes h ave renominated him as well.

Why is it so hard for some people here to acknowledge that Clinton was NOT perfect, and that if he'd acted like a real Dem instead of a New Dem on economic issues, we wouldn't still be dealing with this Adam Smith failure 17 or 18 years after his first nomination? Clinton had a wonderful opportunity to put a Keynesian on the Fed and CHOSE NOT TO. How in the heck is that defensible by a progressive?

8. I favor a two term limit for the Fed Chairman
Someone with that much control over the economy cannot be allowed to hold that position for life. The longer he holds that post the more power he accumulates, and the harder it will be to get rid of him.

31. Too True
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 07:23 PM by Bark Bark Bark
"None of this would've happened if you'd all voted for NADER!!"

A WEE STORY

Once upon a time, there was a grand old building called The United States of America.

Unable to sustain an ever-increasing profit, the owners let the building fall into dilapidation, then sent a shiftless wino named George to burn the place down for the insurance money. Men of God, they didn't give a damn who died in the fire.

The fire department showed up, but there was a fight over who was in charge, which was to be decided by the people in the burning building.

"Ah'd like ta help," said former Fire Chief Bill. "After all, Ah've done it before." But one of the people in the building screamed down, "No! Go away! You had sex outside of marriage! We would be ashamed!"

"How about mah wife?" said Bill. "NO! She's a DIRTY BITCH WHORE SLUT!" bellowed a man who fancied himself 'progressive.' "And you have money now! We want to be saved by someone untainted by wealth!!" screamed the fool, right before he succumbed to the flames. Bill left to help tsunami victims, who didn't give a damn about his sex life.

"I shall lead!" cried Al. "And I wish nothing to do with Fire Chief Bill!" Another idiot piped up. "You are a bore!" Al walked away, dejected. "Bill should've helped me just now," he moaned.

"Let's put this fire OUT! Are you with me?" bellowed Howard, seizing a hose and dragging it towards the flames. "Let's roll! YEEHAW!" "Ooooooh, he's crazy!" someone cried. "Next!"

Another wino shuffled out of the alley, guzzling from a bottle given to him by the building's owners. "I am completely inex-inexperienced in firefighting," belched Ralph. "Therefore, I am most qualified to lead this--this--this--*hic*--firefighting team." Amazingly, several people in the building bought into this logic, but everyone else ignored him. He hit Al with his empty bottle.

"Reporting for duty," shouted John. John had extensive, honorable service in putting out fires, and quickly became a favorite among half of the burning building's occupants.

But the other half thought that if they chose George, the wino hired to burn the building down, he would save THEM in gratitude, and the Devil take the rest. They attacked the other occupants--who were already fighting among themselves, being morons--and threw furniture down on John and the others.

In the end, George was chosen, and he let the building burn down, killing everyone inside, while he lay in the alley drinking. "It's hard work," he complained, ignoring the screams as he emptied his bladder into his underwear.

The owners built a sweatshop where the building once stood, and lived happily ever after.

THE END.

22. Greenspan, Clinton Clash on Forecasts
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/03/15/financial/f102324S14.DTL

Alan Greenspan and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton clashed briefly Tuesday over rosy surplus forecasts the Federal Reserve Chairman relied on to support President President Bush's 2001 tax cuts, estimates that turned out to be considerably off the mark.

"It turns out that we were all wrong," Greenspan conceded at a Senate hearing.

"Just for the record, we were not all wrong, but many people were wrong," Clinton, D-N.Y., quickly shot back.

Greenspan lent critical support for Bush's first-term tax cuts, saying they would stimulate the then-ailing economy. Clinton and many Democrats voted against the tax cuts, arguing that they would mainly benefit the wealthy and that federal deficits would balloon.

26. Thank God somebody of substance is calling out this corrupt weasel.
Greenspan is nothing more than a Rovian operative. He will go down as a flash-in-the-pan politician who couldn't keep his eye on the real ball, but who had a lot of people fooled for a very long time.
