Group: Withdrawal could hurt U.S. citizens
NEW YORK, March 11 : A U.S. decision to withdraw from a World Court agreement could endanger U.S. citizens detained abroad, Human Rights Watch said Friday in New York.

The decision also has immediate consequences for the rights of foreigners held in the United States, the group said.

The International Court of Justice, often called the World Court, can hear disputes between parties to the Optional Protocol of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, including cases brought by states on behalf of people detained in foreign countries who have been denied access to their consular officials. The protocol was proposed and signed by the United States, which has gone at least 10 times to the World Court to seek help for U.S. citizens held abroad.

The Bush administration withdrew from the protocol Monday. <snip>

3. What happened to...
"Give us your tired, your weak and oppressed"? There is something even more sad anymore and that is so many people seem so accepting of what has happened and is going on. I am so ashamed of the US. I know that as a country we can not go back in time but how at least might we get back on track of being remotely civilized?
