Hong Kong's Leader Plans to Resign Thursday, Ending Nearly Eight Years of Rocky Rule

HONG KONG (AP) - Hong Kong's deeply unpopular leader was expected to break his silence Thursday and announce his long-rumored resignation, an official said - a move that could trigger a new round of street protests by pro-democracy groups.
Tung Chee-hwa, who has led the former British colony since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997, would step down with two years left in his term, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

As rumors swirled for 10 days that he was quitting, Tung declined to address the chatter about his future - prompting opposition lawmakers to say he was embarrassing one of Asia's most affluent, modern and efficient societies. Hong Kong prides itself on its transparency and solid rule of law.

"The government is once again turning Hong Kong into an international joke," said legislator Lee Cheuk-yan, who demanded that Tung's administration explain itself in the legislature.

1. Tell China to get out?
To get out of a Chinese city?

Weird, that. Perhaps Bush will invite the British to reclaim their ill-gotten gain?

2. Hong Kong is a part of the People's Republic of China - period.
China is under no obligation whatsoever to maintain the "two systems" policy.

4. It's funny how people still refuse to accept that
Hong Kong is PRC. Does that mean the PRC is rosy? No, of course not. But Hong Kong is PRC. Full stop, as the Brits say.

5. No country is under any obligation to listen to Bush
but it doesn't stop him from acting like Barney Fife with a bullet in his pocket!

Actually, I made the comment on the story a bit tongue in cheek. It's another opportunity for Bush to stick his fist in the middle of another country's politics and act like he's in charge.
