SA Man Gets 30 Years for Torching Muslim Businesses

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A former auto shop manager has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for setting arson fires at three convenience stores run by Muslims in 2003 and 2004 .

Thomas C. Carroll, 33, of San Antonio, received the sentence Monday as part of a plea agreement reached in early February, according to the Bexar County District Attorney's Office. He may also face financial restitution for damage done to the stores.

The charges against Carroll were classified as hate crimes under the 2001 James Byrd Hate Crime Act, which in this case raised the penalty for the offenses to a maximum of 99 years because they were committed against people because of their national origin.

No one was hurt in any of the blazes, but the incidents created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety in San Antonio's small Muslim community. The stores were all operated by immigrants from India or Pakistan.
