Radio Producer Could Always Count on 'Gannon' for Tips

By Joe Strupp

Published: February 18, 2005

San Antonio radio producer Susan Farris could always count on James Guckert, a.k.a. former White House correspondent Jeff Gannon, to pitch an appearance on the shows she produces at conservative talk station KTSA.

He was not only anxious about pushing his story of the day, but seemed to always have some kind of inside knowledge about the White House, as well.

"I said, 'How do you have such great sources?' and he just laughed it off," she told E&P Friday. "Now we all know how."

Farris, who has worked in San Antonio radio for more than a decade, said she came across Guckert first at GOPUSA.com, then later read his work on Talon News, his online home prior to his recent resignation. "I would call for people to use on the air and they suggested him when I asked about White House coverage," she recalled. "They called themselves a re-write service. They would take other people's work and put it up on their site." (Among the charges against Guckert was that he often simply rewrote White House press releases as news stories.)

17. "anxious about pushing his story of the day"
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 11:24 PM by havocmom
His story of the day? He didn't do stories. He helped get the WH talking points out. He is a page boy, a herald in the imperial court of the neocon megalomaniacs. He is a poorly trained parrot, all fluffed feathers and echoing only what he has been told.

His story of the day? Hey AKA Gannon, is not how real journalists get their story of the day!

edit: Sorry meant to reply to original post. Must be getting on to bed time.

7. Hate to say it but Rove ain't doin' no pillow talkin'
Guckert's source may be talking to Rove but I'm certain, no matter what that CBS opinion piece states, Rove wasn't spilling anything to Guckert.

10. How can you be so certain?
Even the most fiendish political operatives slip up now and then. Especially if sex is involved.

13. Here is more. Focus on the propaganda and insider information campaign
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 05:24 PM by Pirate Smile
by the WH, not sex.

"Guckert, she said, frequently passed on what he clearly thought was insider information, during his 12 appearances on KTSA during 2003 and 2004. She first heard from him the expression "shock and awe" to refer to the massive U.S. bombing attack at the start of the Iraq war, and he fingered Mary Mapes as the producer of the so-called "Rathergate" segment on "60 Minutes" before she had seen that mentioned elsewhere.

"He very often called me and offered to be on the show to talk about his stories," she said. "I used to book him all the time. We used him on tons of White House stuff." She said she "had no idea" that Gannon was not Guckert's real name."

6. Gannon's usefulness to the media IS the story.
It explains both why the MSM in the White House Press Corps didn't expose him, AND it explains his presence there.

The prostitution/escort websites are the diversion, a flash in the media's face as the rest of Roverer's team makes a hasty withdrawl, and destroys all the evidence.

Anyone here old enough to remember the meme: "If ANY of your IM team is caught or captured, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions"

Since the time of Goldwater's defeat, the republicans have tried hard to leave NOTHING to either chance or the will of the people.

11. He's the sacrificial cog in the RW disinfomation-smear machine
He was always designed to be the replaceable gear that meshs between the "media" and the WH/RNC. He's just a cheap component built to wear and be replaced....while protecting the rest of the much more expensive machine. Obviously, someone really f'd up on the gay prostitute angle. No doubt they didn't bother to vet because he was recommended by someone for the job. That's really the crime here, it's the word-of-mouth acceptance that he's "one of us" that allowed this to become a scandal. Look to see who resigns from the WH staff short to spend more time with the family....good chance that'll be the person who brought him in.

They'll be other Guckert-Gannon gears to replace him.

else did, proves to me that the memos were a Rove plant to embarrass Dan Rather and CBS.

18. I think his source was McClellan
...notice how the road keeps going back to TEXAS.

I also think they should look HARD at Eberle. He's not just the guy who hired JimmyJeff. He's in this, in some fashion, up to his eyeballs. The focus needs to expand to him, IMHO.

There is still a lot to be discovered about this whole puzzling mystery of Jim/Jeff including who has been pulling the strings of his well-coordinated rise and tenure as an important cog in the RW propaganda/disinformation mill.
