NASA says 2005 may be warmest year yet
A weak El Nino and human-made greenhouse gases could make 2005 the warmest year since records started being kept in the late 1800s, according to NASA scientists.

While climate events like El Nino - when warm water spreads over much of the tropical Pacific Ocean - affect global temperatures, the increasing role of human-made pollutants plays a big part.

"There has been a strong warming trend over the past 30 years, a trend that has been shown to be due primarily to increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere," said James Hansen of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, based in New York.

The warmest year on record was 1998, with 2002 and 2003 coming in second and third, respectively.

1. ...love it...
Now what part does the "weak el Nino" play, and what part do greenhouse gases play?

Are they a duet, or does el Nino trumpet the loudest? or vice versa?

And how about when the climate was much warmer than today, ie, when Greenland voted green?

Climate change speculation is a joke....

4. ...well when they've dried their eyes...
...perhaps they may care to answer the question, ie, what part does El Nino play in relation to greenhouse gases?

6. You've somewhat swapped cause and effect
The reason for the frequency and intensity of the El Nino effect is in part the warming effect of the greenhouse gases, that is to say of course, global warming.

watch bushco try to find a way to spin this. they try to pretend like global warming is the old "watermelon seeds cause babies" myth, and meanwhile, NASA announces that we have the 4 highest temperature years on record during the last decade, with the highest yet being the coming year. listen for rush looseass's response...

15. Of course you know climate change isn't about local weather...
There are some folks, maybe even a few reading this thread, who think that because their county had a cold winter, global warming is a hoax. The actual phenomenon is measured in worldwide temperature averages (including oceanic), procession/recession of glaciers, and sea levels. Global warming could easily lead to increasingly rapid oscillations of localized extreme weather and more frequent heat-engine storms such as hurricanes, but for some reason we all want to think that it means walks in the park all year long.

...when they become middle-aged. By then, the effects of global warming should be significant enough to cause everything from famine to changes in the sea level (welcome to the NYC municipal pool - formerly known as Battery Park).

Glad I didn't breed...

14. In Alaska
Glaciers are melting and the permafrost is, well, not so permanent anymore. In fact they are concerned that if there is drilling in ANWR (and I hope there isn't) they won't actually be able to build the rigs necessary to do so because the terrain no longer support it (not being able to drill woould be a good thing but global warming is not a good thing).

16. Yes, they are.

Global warming is real and underway

The mainstream scientific consensus on global warming is becoming clearer every day: changes in our climate are real and they are underway. Now. But we can do something about it.

The evidence that human-induced global warming is real is increasingly clear and compelling.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, the mean surface temperature of the earth has increased by about 1.1º F (0.6°Celsius).

Over the last 40 years, which is the period with most reliable data, the temperature increased by about 0.5 º F (0.2-0.3°Celsius).
