RNC challenges ads criticizing Bush's Social Security plan

snip

The RNC's letter noted that the stations have a responsibility as holders of Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites) licenses "to avoid broadcasting deliberate misrepresentations. ... This letter places you on notice that the information (in the ad) is false and misleading."

Don't Fox news stations have a responsibility not to broadcast information that is not false and misleading? We should file a challenge against the entire network.

7. remember the courts rules Fox did not have to "tell the truth" when
reporters sued them...the courts said Fox had no obligation.

Oh...the irony.

5. Yahoo Document Not Found
Working (USA Today) link

In the first shot at such ads, the RNC last week sent letters to 14 TV outlets calling on them to stop airing an ad produced by the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org. None took the spot off the air.

A station in South Bend, Ind., with MoveOn's approval, added a statement to the ad that partially addressed the RNC's complaint. The station manager says he wasn't responding to the RNC's pressure, but to his own belief that the ad could be misleading.

The ad shows elderly actors working at a variety of jobs. A narrator says Bush's plan would cut retirees' Social Security benefits "up to 46%." It concludes that Bush's plan would force many Americans into "working" retirements.

The RNC's complaint: The 46% cut would apply to those who retire in the year 2075 or later, not current retirees...

So?

12. FOX misquoting FDR on Social Security
Al Franken (Air America) just did a segment on how Britt Hume of Fox News recently misquoted FDR and characterized him as supporting private SS accounts. And the misquote is spreading. More disinformation from the Republicans regarding FDR's "support" of private accounts to come...

13. "avoid broadcasting deliberate misrepresentations"
if that's the case, why should ANY bush tv campaign ad be aired since he's full of lies?

also, politicians should not be extorted by tv station for airtime. i think most politicians raise money to spend for tv ads. what a waste. i think bob dole called it legalized bribery.

The letter on its face smells of blackmail!!!

The RNC should be slammed on the mat for this one!!!

They hold NO immunity from State prosecution!!!

In the meantime, the stations' should be sure to screen ALL GOVERNMENT-PRODUCED PROPAGANDA WHICH APPEARS "FALSE AND/OR MISLEADING"!!

20. Good Lord they are more like damned Soviets every day!
Remember Comrades, THE PARTY NEVER misrepresents or misstates. Only Liberal Enemies of the State (and yes, the Liberals in the Soviet Union are Right-Wing, proving quite conclusively that it isn't Left vs. Right but Free People vs. Totalitarian Bootlickers from BOTH SIDES) fabricate and misrepresent.

End message.

27. And we don't even know about the "quiet" type of blackmail & threats,...
,...that occurs behind the scenes. They probably do this kind of shit every single day.

It is unconscionable that this kind of stuff is happening in a so-called "free and democratic" nation.

Geez.

These people have not only have no sense of shame- nor any integrity, but are apparently irony impaired as well.

Of course, this precedent could come back to bite them in the ass one day- although that hope relies on Amerika becoming rational again- which is not a prospect I foresee anytime soon.

Just go to http://www.factcheck.org and see how horribly the Bush campaign ads compared to Kerry campaign ads for accuracy.

What a bunch of fucking hypocrite douchebags!

They'll probably select King Douchebag (Novak) for '08 candidate for Pres.

32. accuracy is a pretext--it might very well be accurate-but to have stations
hesitate, or even to give stations a pretext not to air these ads is a money-shot success for the Rovian Political Dirty Tricks squad.

So, even if when the ads air, the ads will be delivered under a cloud of scepticism--it is a political marketing shot across the bow.
