Putin criticizes his own finance minister

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin a public reprimand Monday, the Moscow Times reported.

Putin publicly blasted the embattled finance minister for his implementation of the monetization of benefits Monday, two days ahead of a no-confidence vote in the government called by 100 State Duma deputies, the newspaper said.

Putin used the opportunity of the regular Monday Cabinet meeting to upbraid Kudrin, who has accepted blame for the failure to make adequate cash payments to the country's 40 million pensioners, the paper said.

Amid widespread outrage and the largest public protests of Putin's presidency, rattled regional authorities have rushed to restore free or subsidized transportation for pensioners and war veterans. Putin has ordered the payment of $4 billion in extra subsidies to smooth the impact of the reform
