NYT: G.O.P. Irate Over Delay on Rice Vote
G.O.P. Irate Over Delay on Rice Vote
By CARL HULSE

Published: January 21, 2005

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 - Republicans in Congress seethed Thursday over Democrats' refusal to allow a quick vote on Condoleezza Rice's confirmation as secretary of state, a dispute that provided a quick reality check about the partisan divide on Capitol Hill just hours after President Bush was sworn in.

"If this is the kind of comity we can expect for the rest of the session, we are not getting off to a good start," said Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona, a member of the Republican leadership. "It is churlish."

Senator John W. Warner, Republican of Virginia, said, "You want continuity in this country, and this is a senior cabinet minister." He added, "This didn't win them any merit badges."...

***

In delaying Ms. Rice's inevitable confirmation, Democrats said it was only reasonable to give their senators the chance to express their views given Ms. Rice's crucial role in developing the administration's Iraq and antiterror policies. Under an agreement, the nomination will be open to nine hours of debate beginning Tuesday with a vote expected Wednesday....

69. That's hitting the nail on the head, Just Me
Everything that has been said and quoted upon are proven and concrete facts, and they are now on that historical record. The only defense I heard from Condi was her dismay that anyone would impune her credibility. (I'm still wondering where she keeps it?)

We don't have the votes to stop her installation, but since this administration has a habit of rewriting history as it suits them, there is now an official record of some very important and critical truths.

Her non-substance testimony during the 9-11 Hearings are not a part of our Nation's historical record; this is - FINALLY! Even the comments about Rummy are a part of the record. There is some satisfaction from that - not much, but some.

This is just a hint of the Reichbot arrogance.
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 11:26 AM by TahitiNut
Not only do they presume themselves the awarder of "merit badges," they're totally intolerant of even the slightest of 'symbolic' dissent from the Democrats in the Senate (who represent, by the way, a MAJORITY of citizens).

There's not even the slightest indication that the Reichsmonsters will accommodate anything but goose-stepping compliance with their one-party rule.

It's scorched-earth politics - total annihilation is their objective.

13. Harry Reid said on the floor of the Senate
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 06:07 AM by joanski01
yesterday that Senator Boxer would get one hour to debate, that she might not use it all and would give some time to other Dems who wanted to speak. Some of the other speakers that Reid mentioned that I can recall are Durbin, Kerry (for 20 minutes), Levin, Kennedy, Feinstein (10 minutes) and Biden will speak in favor of confirmation. He mentioned a couple of others that I cannot recall. Dems will get a total of 4 1/2 hours. I can't imagine the Republicans useing all of their time.

Edited to add that Senator Byrd will speak, too.

Lugar is Foreign Relations.

What's amusing about this is that the Repigs can stage a big ol' television extravaganza with their 24-hour "they won't confirm our judges" telethon, and then complain when the Democrats want to debate something *really* important, a crucial cabinet appointment.

The Dems are probably just playing for the cameras. Once they are through with their speeches most of them will vote to confirm Rice.

On the other hand, is nice to hope that the Democrats have something to spring on the Bush administration. Like maybe evidence of the administration lying about WMD's.

47. What? The PROBLEM is her INCOMPETENCE, the "factors" you cite
are the bogus things the pukes will bring up. Democrats may or may not gain anything, but AMERICA will gain a small dose of truth and bush* will gain an impotent SoS, so hopefully she's used sparingly and doesn't fuck up too much.

Your kind of attitude is the reason the Dems are out of power. The "I can't see immediate results from telling the truth/opposing the liar, so I might as well just shut up and go along" attitude is the problem, NOT the solution.

60. Yah, the corporate media needs to learn to put the proper 'frame'
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 12:34 PM by calipendence
on issues and not keep coddling to the Rethugs talking points.

In the spirit of Lackoff's points about "framing" of discussions, the media needs to start saying things like:

- "tax revenue cuts" instead of "tax relief"
- "social security phase out" instead of "social security reform"
- "no money for children" instead of "no child left behind"
- "no bird skies initiative" or "dirty skies initiative" instead of "clear skies initiative"
- "Civil Liberties Restrictions Act" instead of "Patriot Act"
- "Spreading U.S. control and imperialism" instead of "spreading freedom and Democracy"
- "restrict court access" instead of "Tort Reform"
- "Forest Destruction Initiative" instead of "Healthy Forests Initiative"
- "selfish conservative" instead of "compassionate conservative"

The important difference is that we should seek more honest descriptions of the issues from them than the Rethugs have told them to use (through their corporate sponsors, Murdoch, etc.).

This is my first post. Great website! How do I get a picture for my threads? Anyway, any Dem who votes in favor of the pro torture duo is voting in favor of torture. If you think for a second when more proof of torture is learned that the bushies won't say to the dems-"you voted for this cabinet!" like they did with Kerry's initial war vote. Biden is a spineless good ol boy.

Thanks for the greeting. It is good to be here but technology really needs to be more intuitive. Is it the Google taskbar Options? 68. URL is the "address" of the picture. If you see a picture on a website
and position your cursor over it and right-click a menu will pop up. At the bottom of the menu is "properties", select that and a window will pop up that describes the qualities of the picture, that is, the format, the url, the size etc. If you highlight this address you can copy it (depress CTRL and C keys at same time) and then in your post you can "paste" it by depressing CTRL and V keys at the same time. When you do that you should see the url appear. Now select the Preview button at the bottom of the screen and you should see the picture, sometimes you will just see the url and not the picture, but clicking on the url (or link) will bring the picture up.

Example: This is the picture of Bob Boudelang from the DU homepage

Here is what I typed to get it to show up:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/home/icon_bob .gif
(only to make the url show up instead of the pic I entered a space before .gif in this case.)

I got the url via the process described above.

One caveat for geting the pic to appear is it has to be posted on the www somewhere. Meaning a picture you have ONLY on your computer will NOT appear. To get it on the web there are various FREE picture hosting websites, I can't recall the name right now but someone will - little help)

It's a lot less complicated than my ramblings make it seem.

53. This is democracy/capitalism at its best...
They see the law of supply and demand working as it should. There is a huge demand (half of the country) who don't like what this president is doing and as long as we remain po'd and let our reps know we are, they'll be "supplying" our demand by getting in the way of a "smooth sailing" reign by these rethugs... If the Rethugs don't like that, then perhaps they might want to figure out how they shouldn't get us upset so much. Apparently that doesn't occur to them, with the corporate media saying everything is rosy for them.

Boxer and her office were probably floored by the amount of support she got when she opposed the election vote, and that has served to inspire her to become more of a leader in the opposition camp. As long as we keep telling her how much we think she's doing the right thing, and as long as she succeeds in getting more power, it will inspire her (and others who see her budding success) to do the same thing.

The rethugs have to understand that they can't just "turn off" opposition through their neo-fascist tactics as long as we still have a constitution that protects us.

66. The USA ought to be able to do better than rice
rice is a demonstrated failure as a decision maker, and is unable to owe up to mistakes. I don't know what she is good for, but it would be irresponsible to put somebody as incompetent as rice in that position.

75. I say, "Give the Dems some room"! They have over 4 hours of time..
on C-SPAN at least. Plus I have noticed that the MSM is covering a bit more of dissent against Bush. I don't think Bush is going to get such an easy ride from the media as he did the first four years. Don't misinterpret me, I still have very little respect for the majority of the MSM, but, sometimes they do come with some things that grab a bit. It's almost like...."OK, George we let you get away with first four years, now you are going to have to really PRODUCE this "legacy that you have been speaking about".

I think that any maneuvering the Democrats can do in Committee hearings or floor debates is going to, sooner or later, get some ears....someplace. EXPOSURE! One move at a time!

In any event, Rice will be confirmed! But, let's get as much on the RECORD as possible! I believe that is what the Republicans are concerned about.

79. On the Record, indeed!
As did the Midnight Dems in a empty House in the middle of the night to get their POVs on the record.

We need the fact that there are still some Americans that oppose torture on record for generations to read.

76. Race baiting:Ex-Klansman Blocks Condi's Confirmation
A former Ku Klux Klansman who once vowed to keep the military segregated is single-handedly holding up the confirmation of Secretary of State-nominee Condoleezza Rice, the first African-American woman to be appointed to the office.

"Senator Robert Byrd, an outspoken critic of the Iraq war, announced late that he would not allow the Senate to approve Ms. Rice without a few days of consideration of her lengthy testimony, and at least a token debate on the floor," reports the New York Times.

Robert Byrd isn't manipulated by white guilt attacks, he is in touch with what he's done. It works on Biden and the like.
