WEAPONS OF 'MISTAKEN' DESTRUCTION
ALARMING claims that Iraq could deploy weapons of mass destruction in 45 minutes were "misinterpreted", MI6 boss Richard Dearlove said yesterday.

They were also given "undue prominence" in a Government dossier making the case for war, leading the public mistakenly to believe that Saddam Hussein could hit neighbouring countries with long range arms.

In an unprecedented move, Sir Richard - of whom there are no recent photos - became the first chief of the Secret Intelligence Service to give evidence in public. But he stayed in the shadows, speaking to the re-opened Hutton inquiry by audio-link.

1. weapons of mass distraction
/no one bekieves that /iraq posed an iminent threat to the
US. WE are watching sad days as American oligarchs try to keep a kid on the debocle, while people here at home aout to be thinking about just who in the hell is going to pay for all this? Another tax cut

2. BBC news online political reporter has an original angle on this one
Commenting on Richard Dearlove's testimony, he says that what was really fascinating was the background noise that was clearly audible. He says it sounded like MI6 had got the plumbers in while their top honcho was testifying, perhaps mending a lavatory next door to the interview room where Sir Richard was hooked up by audio link to the High Court:

So were the spooks implying that their boss's evidence really was 'scraping the bottom of the barrel' or was it a wry comment on truth having gone down the pan?
Fight the good fight! Or: The only true voice of political opposition in the UK today is the media?
