Leading Democrat questions Bush administration on Yucca funding
WASHINGTON, January 19

...

Congressman John Dingell of Michigan is a supporter of the Yucca Mountain project. He released a letter to the director of the Office of Management and Budget asking whether the administration planned to pursue the same funding scheme for next year as it did for 2005.

The 2005 plan linked most of the funding request for Yucca Mountain to congressional passage of legislation assuring that money collected through a special nuclear waste fund was spent for the project.

The legislation never passed, and Congress approved only 577 million dollars of the 880 million Bush had requested for Yucca Mountain.

A spokesman for the Office of Management and Budget declined to give details on how the administration plans to treat the nuclear waste dump in the 2006 budget, which is scheduled to be released February seventh.
