Mormons saddle up for Bush's second coming but hope for a little humility
Religious right in Utah rein in their enthusiasm as inauguration nears

(snip)

Asked about their decision to re-elect the president, a lot of Utah Mormons, like Christian conservatives in general, will say they knew in their gut he was a man of God, on whom they could rely.

But when it comes to policies many of them are queasy. "I voted for Bush. I thought Kerry was dishonest. He was evil almost," said Julie Smith, out shopping in the prosperous and devout suburb of Bountiful, just outside Salt Lake City. "I like Bush because he's a good man and I think he's got wonderful ideas, but I don't think it's worked out the way he thought it would."

Ms Smith, a retired teacher, has particular distaste for the president's flagship education policy, but she is also unnerved by the downward spiral of events in Iraq particularly as it affects the local boys from the Utah national guard.

"I like the idealism but I don't like what's happening. But at least he'll try," she said hopefully of the president's second term.

1. Mormons vote 99% GOP
Because it was democrats who outlawed plural marriages and they've never forgotten or forgiven. Where is LDS Jock on this one?

Just ask them how they condone Bush's pre-emptive strikes with Christ's Golden Rule.

13. Watch or read the transcripts of the BBC's Power of Nightmares
They explain why people are inspired by Bush even while they recognise how bad and wrong his policies are. They've been sold the carefully concocted national myth of America the Exceptional with its divine destiny to fight evil in the rest of the world. This is the "idealism" they detect in Bush - the battle they think he is fighting to free the poor and oppressed and bring them "freedom, democracy and the American way (all the same thing to their minds, naturally)". Rice was adding another layer to the myth yesterday.

6. I'm from Massachusetts . . .
.

I'm from Massachusetts . . . may we, please, send back our Governor Mitt Romney (R) who is a Mormon to Utah? Uummmmm, no, Romney really lives in Utah despite his protestations of living in Belmont, Massachusetts. We, here, in Massachusetts knew that but somehow or other the majority of Massachusetts voters actually voted Romney into office. I'm still trying to figure out why!??

Meanwhile, Romney votes his Mormon religion, e.g., anti-gay marriage, anti-abortion funding, anti-embryonic stem cell research, etc., etc.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

10. huh? oh, hell, Massachusetts *tries* to play it fair . . .
the state is overwhelming blue, blue, blue, i.e., liberal. Thus, we really try to balance stuff in politics. You see, the legislature is Democratic, through and through. Thus, the Governor should be the opposite party, correct? Of course!

However, Romney doesn't play the game well at all. He's busy trying to use Massachusetts as a stepping stone into the Oval Office in D.C.

As to Bill Weld? Oh, wow. He's a saint compared to Romney. Weld never took himself too seriously. The guy is brilliant, and I mean really brilliant. A great sense of humor. For example, Weld wanted to return to Massachusetts from New York when the gay marriage thing was sent down by the Supreme Judicial Court (the highest state court in Massachusetts) so that he, Weld, would be able to marry, personally, the first same-sex couple. Yup. Bill Weld was okay as Republicans go.

7. What I see as Utah's role for the Democratic Party
Utah's beautiful mountains and salt flats make for nice scenery as Democratic candidates fly over the state on their way to some other state.

Thats right lady everyone's a winner and gets a shiny trophy except for minorities, liberals, gays, and Democrats.

11. I was just wondering, I thought the religious right looked down on Mormons
you know, b/c don't they have a radically warped view on Christianity based on that "Book of Mormon" by Joseph Smith. The one who claims an Angel talked to him in Upstate NY and told him to "essentially" do what Moses did. Its actually pretty funny when you read about the founding of Mormonism and how much is resembles the story of Moses, I call plagiarism on taht one.

12. I grew up with Mormons and they were always quiet about their
religion and did their civic thing. But up here, the Mormons are different. They vote monolithically, believe the same way and are
completely robotic about some of the things they do, such as voting. It must be the area and the leadership. You cannot win a local office against a Mormon opponent.
