NBC: Iraq recalls 2,000 from Saddam’s army
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The security situation in Iraq is so critical now, NBC News has learned, that the Iraqi interior ministry has recalled two full battalions — about 2,000 men — from Saddam Hussein’s army, the same army the United States dissolved. All of them are retrained as special police to battle terrorism expected at polling stations on Jan. 30.

“We needed to find a quick solution so we depended on some ex-military special units,” said Falah al-Naqib, the Iraqi interior minister, told NBC News.

1. Yeah, that'll work
By this time, I'd have to guess that at least 50% of these men are firmly in the insurgents camp.

4. But wait isn't why we murdered all those Fallujah folks?
Because of Sunni/Saddam/Bush/US hating supporters/resistance fighters/ insurgents/terrorists?

5. Are the peacekeepers or
poll place bombers/killers? That is if they even show up.

6. Idiots!
Oh, that's a BRILLIANT move. We are going to GIVE people who are probably part of the insurgency HEAVY WEAPONS? Oh, this will end well.

7. Yesterday's insurgents are today's 'retrained special police'
Do they get weapons?
Are the weapons loaded?
Will we give them RPGs or must they bring their own from home?

8. not onlythat, they get armor...
"And in another departure from past practices, these units will also have the use of armored vehicles by Election Day, Jan. 30. Until now, only coalition troops have had heavy weapons to confront insurgents.

9. Why do I think that all the interested parties have already signed on?
IF they were willing to fight for this cause they would have applied for positions as police/guards, yes?

What would be left in my estimation would be people against this occupation, or at best not wanting to be involved.

Oh, I have a great idea! Let's arm them and tell them all our plans to secure the elections! :eyes:

12. How lovely....we export "democracy" first, and then
...we export military stop-loss!!!

When there's a McDonald's on every corner, and 60 percent of Iraqis are obese and parked on the couch watching Iraqi Idol, our work, short of draining the country of oil, will be done!!!

13. The death squad option?
Negroponte's specialty. Of course these ex-Saddam people would smell blood if this was the case, and know that Allawi was admitting he was terrified of the future by attempting to co-opt them.

Hard to know what to make of this, if true, other than it being a sign of desperation.

15. Just a little bush inspired lie, after a while it's just like
second nature to those pieces of shit. No different than the mushroom cloud one, really.

16. No, it really wasn't a lie....
We really did train 120,000 Iraqi troops. What she neglected to tell us that they bolted to the other side at the first opportunity (can you say deception by omission?). Me thinks we are now fighting against US trained insurgents - you know, part of that small group of dead-enders.

17. True enough, however, Biden carefully phrased the question
"boots on the ground, ready to go" and so on, so there could be no mistaking that response for an almost reflexive burp-like lie

18. Fair enough....
I haven't read the transcript yet, but I will. Speaking of transcripts, I've spent quite a bit of time digesting the Washington Post - Bush interview on Air Force One and have come to understand, without a doubt, the bush* misadminstration is one entire deception! It's a great study as to exactly how Bush* dodges telling the outright lie and sows the wiggle room seed for for the next flip-flop at the same time. Smarmy asshole!

20. bush is a punk, he has never grown up. All of this seems to be
some kind of a sick, corrupt game with the bastard. He knew god damn well that they would never find any WMD in Iraq, but he went with the story figuring that he could shit the public with some other lie when the time came to "owe up" and it would be too late to do anything about it anyway, we would be into it with permanent bases and a "we have lost too many lives to stop now" attitude.

This is precisely what happened and why things are so utterly fucked up now.

22. And coupled with the fact....
that this nation has a collective memory of about 90 days (or at least until the next trumped-up news event is floated), we are, by default, enabling him while his cronies run to the bank.

You're assessment is spot-on and I often reflect on the saying, "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission", and wonder when ethics and morality kick into play with the Bush* base (after all, we know Bush* lacks both).

Those always work so well. Why waste time on a well considered plan?
