Bloomberg says campaign will focus on 9/11
Bloomberg says campaign will focus on 9/11

The Associated Press

Last Updated: January 11, 2005, 11:31:00 AM PST

NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg signaled Tuesday that his re-election campaign this year will focus largely on his legacy as leader of New York as it rebounded from the death and destruction of Sept. 11.

Bloomberg gave himself much of the credit for the Sept. 11 turnaround as he delivered his annual State of the City address, which sets the stage for his re-election bid.

He recalled that at his swearing-in ceremony in 2001, smoke was still rising from the World Trade Center site.

snip...
His opponents, however, say the Sept. 11 recovery has occurred largely in spite of the Republican mayor.

10. They are gonna milk this one dry
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 04:34 PM by Julius Civitatus
The GOP will keep milking 9/11 for all it's worth. Rudy is the best (worst) example of this, even setting up "security" companies with Kerik to cash in the whole thing.

Bloomberg couldn't be any better, of course.

2. Awww, I thought Rudy was the savior from 9-11.
Now I have to change my prayers as to who to thank.

3. hmm, he wasn't even mayor on 9/11
I hope that democrats will use his comments about using 9/11 for his political gain and brand him with it. It's disgusting.

4. we're not buying it.
Sheesh, sometimes I feel like the only place that has moved on is NYC, then Mayor 38% Approval comes out with some bullcrap like that. OK, I'm glad bars are smoke-free now, but I think he got his walking papers when he invited the Republicans to come here for their convention.

He is toast.

8. Fix or no, riches or no...I cannot see this man winning re-election.
I grew up in NYC...I live near it now, I worked there until 2 years ago. I keep reading about this man, and to my mind, New Yorkers are ON to him. They will NOT let him have another term.

9. For better or worse, Bloomberg is going to be re-elected
I'm mixed on the guy. He is such a relief from Giuliani who called press conferences every day of his administration and demonized everyone from artists to ferret owners to taxi drivers. Bloomberg on the other hand is low key and doesn't seem to need the daily ass-kissing that Rudy demanded. Bloomberg is a social liberal. We could do better and this city deserves someone with a higher vision or perhaps someone who would make the city even BLUER.

But I just don't see anyone beating Bloomberg. The smoking thing would hurt him except that it is now common all over the world - Italy and Ireland have smoking bans. Other than that, what has he done that pisses off voters?

12. What are you smoking.
Bloomie is hated by the minority community. He may be able to talk the monied and bigoted class to vote for him, but many of us are just waiting to vote him out of office. This man's blind ambition is vile; HE is vile.

13. Hey, I'd like to be wrong but Bloomberg is going to smoke Ferrer
Unless Bill Clinton runs for mayor, Bloomberg isn't going anywhere.

11. One hundred years from now,
will candidates be invoking 9/11?

Had to listen to Michael Chertoff & 9/11 on the radio today. It never ends.
