Cheney's focus may change in 2nd term

By Associated Press
Monday, January 10, 2005

WASHINGTON - Like the man behind the curtain working the levers in the "Wizard of Oz," Dick Cheney has been called the real power in President Bush's administration, perhaps the strongest vice president in U.S. history.

But as Bush enters his second term, Cheney's role is in flux. His chief task in Bush's first administration - mentoring a novice president with little foreign policy or legislative experience - has been accomplished. He remains dogged by heart disease and an FBI probe of a subsidiary of Halliburton, the company he once ran. ......

"He was so influential that it was almost insulting to call him a vice president," said Paul Light, professor of public service at New York University. "He was a mentor, chair of the kitchen Cabinet, legitimizer, Rasputin - you name it - all rolled into one. Those roles have been chipped away over time." ......

As Bush turns in his second term to forging his presidency's legacy, he is expected to use Cheney to push his domestic agenda - overhauling Social Security and the tax code - in Congress, where Cheney served for 10 years as a Wyoming congressman and where he still enjoys strong influence among House conservatives. .......

1. And while we here at DU sit and speculate when Jeb will announce his
bid for the White House Cheney will be making his plans to steal the next election for himself. this has been weighing on my mind a lot lately. the obvious choice to inherit the presidency is right in front of our faces. Can anyone remember a time when the previous terms VP did NOT enter the running in the next election?

Cheney's already got one foot in the grave, and is so visually unappealing, even Murdoch's dumping his entire fortune into buying CNN, ABC and MSNBC wouldn't spin Cheney into the White House.

In contrast, Bush at least has been able to drag the Right Wing and Christian Fundamentalists along with his superficial display of religion and the Macho-Cowboy-Tough Guy attitude too many people in this country seem to admire.

Cheney just scares people, period. My money is on Jeb.
