Two Military-Themed Channels Unveiled
When I grew up on an Army post in Europe in the early 70s ...all we had was radio free Europe and some AFN radio ....

NEW YORK - Ten-hut! When the Military Channel reports for duty Monday at 2000 hours, it will be a boon for armchair generals and fans of corporate warfare, too.

The debut comes only five days after another network, the Military History Channel, began operating. Both are targeting much the same audience with a similar programming mix, and are bankrolled by two of the cable TV industry's biggest and most successful players.

Let the battle begin.

The Military Channel is a repositioning of the aviation-centered Discovery Wings channel, which is already seen in about 35 million homes. It's the 14th domestic channel operated by Discovery Communications Inc., including TLC and the Discovery Network.

1. something really sick...
that such a large amount of people enjoy watching military-themed shows...

Don't get me wrong...my father and I were history buffs, and enjoyed watching World war II documentaries...but that's a far cry from Oliver North's War Stories or anything else that glories militarism for militarism's sake.

These two channels will not be on my satellite box.

3. I see what this will do! This will make the military look fun, exciting &
give it a false impression for young minds who might see some of this stuff and say this doesn't look too bad. I'll join --or incase of the draft--it give people a false sense of comfort.

I may seem very cruel but I have seen only the worst war has done and channels that glorify it is VERY upsetting to me.

6. That's all we need, more Fascist channels. Let's train the brown shirts
right. Military is good, peace is bad, must spend more on weapons and then find reason to use them.

8. Starting about a year before we invaded Iraq,
There were a ton of "glory days" war films on TV. All through the year. And a bunch of rah-rah war films came out, and there was a whole retrospective on the Gulf war, etc., and I said, to Mr. K, "Are we gearing up for a war? Look how much fun it is!"

That's all these channels are doing. Repackaging old wars to take out all the blood and scary stuff and make it look cool, so we forget what it actually looks like (since our own media isn't telling us).
