Illinois Senate May Vote On Gay Rights Law

Saying that she now has enough votes to ensure passage state Sen. Carol Ronen is expected next week to call for a vote on a civil rights bill to protect gays and lesbians in Illinois.

Ronen (D-Chicago) took the measure off the floor in November, at the time saying that she did not have the votes needed. Her decision followed an often acrimonious hour long debate, mostly along religious and moral grounds. (story) She now believes she has the bipartisan support necessary to ensure passage.

A similar measure has already passed the General Assembly.

Democrats must exercise leadership on this issue. It is shameful that in Illinois, it is legal to not rent a home to a gay person just because they are gay and it is legal to fire someone just for being gay.
