Bush to Laud Troops That Stormed Baghdad
President Bush is saluting troops that stormed Baghdad and ousted Saddam Hussein's regime, a day after he visited an Army hospital to pin the Purple Heart on soldiers wounded in the war on terrorism.

The president was to fly on Friday to Fort Stewart, Ga., home of the 3rd Infantry Division, which has suffered more casualties than any other American military division in Iraq.

"The president will personally express his gratitude to the troops of the 3rd Infantry for the sacrifices that they have made in defending freedom in Afghanistan and, more recently, Iraq," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday. "The 3rd Infantry led the coalition offenses to liberate the people of Iraq, and they helped to begin the work of rebuilding Iraq."

The president will present the division, which sent 16,500 troops to the Persian Gulf, with the Presidential Unit Citation, the highest award given a military unit for exceptional valor, an administration official said. More than 40 soldiers from the 3rd Infantry and affiliated units at Fort Stewart have died in the war.

1. This reminds me of Calvin Trillin's "The Gipper lives"
In it he bashes Reagan through Knute Rickne (stay with me here). He writes that he has found George Gipp in a reitrement home in New Jersey and that Gipp tells hime that Rockne never really won all those games at Notre Dame he just waited a few months after the season was over and called the press in and told them that the team had gone undefeated. No one questioned him and the reported it as fact.

Sounds like what W is doing.

The 3dID does deserve credit lots of it but they way W is doing this stinks. Notice that he and Pickles are spending the weekend at Camp David, CAN WE GET ONE WEEKEND OF WORK OUT OF THIS GUY? Or does he think everything is under control.

3. Mission Almost Accomplished
So we didn't get Saddam or the Weapons of Mass Destruction, the Iraqis hate us more than ever, Taliban recruitment is way up and I still haven't been to a single funeral.

But hey I gotta get re-elected and you fellas are gonna help me, so remember when anyone asks you, War is like horseshoes, almost does count for something.

7. Other than fundraising? No
Now if he could only combine the two and hold a fundraiser ON an Army base he coudl take TWO months off. Would that be something W collecting money from GI's, it sort of works that way anyway-

The rich give him money to get elected and get Repubes elected
He returns it plus some in contracts and tax breaks.

6. How freepers see it (compared to, say, Kosovo):

"According to the Democrats, success is bombing Serbia for a couple months,
capitulating to most of Milosevic's demands and then declaring victory, whereas
failure is taking Iraq and holding it for nearly six months with fewer than 400
service deaths."

See, fewer than 400 death is more glorious than none, and Milosevic in Criminal court is capitulation while Saddam roaming free is positively...uh, Churchillian?

13. But You'll Notice
That AWOL didn't bother to tell them that they were going to be rotating back to Iraq within the next 6 months to a year.

I wonder how many are waiting to get out?
