Navy Relieves 80 Commanders Over 5 Years
The Navy has relieved at least 80 commanding officers for performance problems since 1999, a number that includes a recent spike attributed to inappropriate personal behavior by about two dozen officers, Navy officials said Wednesday.

Those behavior problems include adultery, alcohol abuse and inappropriate relationships with subordinates, according to a survey by the Navy inspector general. The report did not attribute the rise in behavior problems to any particular cause.

Other commanders lost their jobs for poor performance, for actions like grounding their ship or colliding with another vessel at sea, according to the survey.

Many of the officers were ship and submarine captains, aircraft squadron commanders or shore post chiefs. Those included in the Navy report held a rank as low as lieutenant or as high as captain.

1. My brother is on a sub....
The first sub he was assigned to had recently acquired a new captain because the previous captain managed to crash the (nuclear) sub into something and do quite a bit of damage. The sub he is on now has a new captain because the previous one had been relieved of duty (don't know why).

8. I was on an aircraft carrier...
We were pulling into Norfolk after a six month Med cruise. The currents and winds were strong that day, and we ran into a Spanish freighter that was anchored in the harbor.

Our commanding officer was gone the next day.

The Chief of Staff and Secretary of Defense should be held to the same set of standards. Rummy would have been gone long ago...

2. Funny how these commanders are required to take responsibility for
there actions, or the actions of their crew, while the Commander-in-Chief conveniently gets to blame everyone else.
