Bible verse cited in baby's slaying
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 02:35 PM by mumon
McKINNEY, Texas — A mother who admitted killing her baby daughter by severing the girl's arms was guided by a Bible passage, the woman's attorney said Tuesday.

In the passage, Jesus refers to cutting off body parts to cast away sin, said the lawyer, David Haynes.

Dena Schlosser, a 35-year-old housewife with a history of mental illness, has referred to the New Testament passage since the killing of her 10-month-old daughter, Haynes told The Associated Press.

This is a very harmful lifestyle.

1. It is a tragedy
that these women seem to go without mental healthcare.

But I wonder who Ms. Schlosser supported in the election. I can't imagine...

3. She also supposedly had
severe post partum depression. Of course her religious community probably didn't recognize it as such or as anything legit, so she got no help.

6. There's a funny thing about mental illness...
there's types of mental illness- and I suspect this is one type- that is heavily culturally influenced.

In some parts of the world, many men suffer from delusions that their penis is disappearing.

"Hysteria" was a common "illness" around the Victorian and early 20th century periods.

This type of "post-partum depression" seems particularly to affect fundamentalists, I suspect, at least from news reports.

11. I know two women who had it
and neither was a fundy. One is dead and the other one is disfigured from trying to burn herself to death.

In Europe, any murder of a child under two is investigated for post partum psychosis in the mother first, other causes later.

We've just denied it exists in the US, patted sufferers on the head and told them they need to pull themselves out of it and be as deliriously happy as they should be according to cultural norms.

It's an ILLNESS, folks, not just a poltiical viewpoint, and it kills.

4. Well then it's okay! This is the United States of Christian Theocracy!
And we will NOT let any good Bible-believing people go to jail. Jail should be saved for homosexuals, Jews and other non-Christians. Heil Falwell!!!!!

8. Kook Capital
California used to be considered the kook capital of the USA, but over the years, it seems to be almost exclusively Texas.

Tom DeLay, The Republican Party Plaform (Texas), Fundamaniacs drowning their kids, and carving them up. Even the mild habanero pepper.

Is it too late to give it back to Mexico?

9. In my fundie days,
seeking mental health help was considered a sign of weakness. MH counselors, psychologists/psychiatrists were practically the devil incarnate.

All you need is JESUS!

14. The experience I have had with "fundies" is that,...
,...the illness, itself, is a demon.

Only a preacher and blind faith can cure a person from the demonic spirit of this/that/other.

How much you wanna bet that, as the evangelical/fundie movement picks up,...so will the crimes "in the name of God"?

10. When religious teachings are taken literally
instead of symbolically this is what happens. Not the first time either. The Aztecs were once a peaceful people, they got into human sacrifice when they began to interpret religious teachings literally, instead of as metaphor, as they were meant. The Tali-Born-Aginners are doing the same thing.
