Corzine Says He'll Run for N.J. Governor
WASHINGTON - Sen. Jon Corzine (news, bio, voting record) called New Jersey's 21 Democratic county chairmen on Wednesday, telling them that he will run for governor, several party sources said.

Corzine, a former investment banker, was expected to make an official announcement Thursday in New Jersey, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released last month, Corzine would easily defeat any candidate in either party if the election were held today. A source close to Corzine said he intends to remain in the Senate while waging a gubernatorial campaign.

A first-term senator, Corzine has been mentioned as a gubernatorial contender since August when Gov. James McGreevey announced he was gay and had an extramarital affair with another man. McGreevey resigned Nov. 15, a year before the next gubernatorial election.

5. I know it's hard
and it gets discouraging. I guess the only way to stay on top of the duplicate situation is to really read a lot of LBN.

Also, if you try, that's all that can be expected. We mods appreciate that.

7. Gotta say - I like Corzine and think he'd make a good gov
Plus (and this is a real plus for me) I'd seriously put him in the running for one of the most liberal senators currently serving. As a NJ voter, I pay pretty close attention to his votes and I've been pretty happy overall.

(For a political barometer, I'm very left on social issues, more central-left on economic issues. I support a balanced budget, but understand that taxes are the price we pay for a functioning society where all citizens have access to a solid education, health care, food and shelter. And I personally don't see how that's a radical position at all!)

8. I'm not in NJ, but I agree with you.
I've loved Corzine since he won in 2000.

11. Bittersweet news.
As is becoming increasingly clear, the best way to counter the Bush Administration is to take back control of the states. So keeping the NJ governorship is incredibly important -- and this is definitely a way toachieve that goal.

That said, we absolutely have to make sure we keep that seat.

12. Sen. Corzine Declares Run for N.J. Governor - Reuters
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=politicsNews&storyID=6982830

NEWARK, N.J. (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine on Thursday declared he is running for governor of New Jersey, pledging to restore the public's faith in a state battered by scandals over money and sex.

The former head of investment firm Goldman Sachs & Co., who spent some $63 million of his personal fortune to win his first-term Senate seat from New Jersey in 2000, is considered an early favorite to fill the post of former Democratic Gov. Jim McGreevey, who left office after admitting a gay adulterous affair.

"Given the history of recent years, New Jersey needs credible, hands-on, executive leadership," Corzine said at a news conference in Newark. He's been warned that the atmosphere in the state capital of Trenton "has been poisoned by procrastination, corruption and financial mismanagement," he said.

"We need a governor whose first priority is to earn the trust of the people of this state," he said as he announced his candidacy. "I believe there's been far too much abuse of power in the state. I believe we ought to change that culture."
