Minority inmates up sharply

Washington — The percentage of minority inmates in U.S. prisons has increased sharply since federal sentencing guidelines took effect 17 years ago, with blacks generally receiving harsher punishments than whites, a federal advisory panel concludes.

According to the study released Tuesday, the average prison sentence today is about 50 months, twice what it was when lawmakers began calling for a uniform sentencing system in 1984.

5. The Incarceration Industry: minorities as assets

my rant: 2.2 million persons in prisons, approx $50,000 cost per person, equals $100 Billion industry. Big money is to be made from "three strikes and you're out", "federally mandated sentencing", etc etc. Imagine if hotels could mandate occupancy rates like this !!
