Virginia Paper Drops Columnist Malkin

NEW YORK On daily newspapers' opinion pages, columnists come and go. But the dumping of an increasingly popular conservative at the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., got more of a public airing than usual.

The newspaper's public editor, Marvin Lake, announced in a column responding to a reader's complaint about editorial balance at the paper that Michelle Malkin, who had been added to give "another voice to the conservatives," had been dropped as a columnist because she was "too stridently anti-liberal."

Lake explained that "readers often took issue with her seemingly mean-spirited rantings and suggested that she be dropped. Well, she’s outta here, silenced for being 'too stridently anti-liberal,' the assessment of the editorial board."

Editorial writer Don Luzzatto told Lake: “I was really put off by her penchant for name-calling and ad hominem attack. I think we can do much better.”

She hides behind her supposed "asian" race when saying it was right for the Japanese to be put in camps--"Of course I'm coming at this from a rational stand point; I can't be racist against Asians, since I'm asian as well." What no one seems to take note of, however, is that she is Filipino and the internees were Japanese.

The Japanese were extremely brutal to the Philippines (Bantam death march, anyone?), so it would be no stretch of the imagination to think she has a great hatred for the Japanese (or Japanese-Americans, as in the case of the camps).

Her claiming to not be a bigot against the Japanese because she's "asian" like they are, is like a European Jew saying Germans should be put in camps and then denying any bigotry or vengeance by saying "Hey, I'm a European, just like them!"

Just like you point out, plenty of Asians hate other Asians, just like plenty of Arabs hate the Arabs in the next town over.

83. One minor correction...

Only a minority of the WWII internees were Japanese--like my grandparents, who were still Japanese citizens despite having been in the US of A since 1906. They weren't allowed to become citizens.

The rest--like my uncle and aunts--were native-born American citizens with zero loyalty to Japan. So was my mother, but she wasn't interned because she had moved to Chicago when the anti-Japanese pogroms were happening on the west coast. She spent the war teaching Japanese to army officers.

I think you're right about Malkin's hatred extending specifically to ethnic Japanese for the reasons you cite--I have always assumed that was the underlying cause. The Japanese occupiers were horrendously brutal wherever they were, and the hatred has passed down through generations.

By the way, my Dad was Jewish--and utterly despised Germany as well. I sometimes get similar feelings, almost reflexively. Mass karma's darned interesting sometimes.

When I said "Japanese-Americans," I was referring to people like you and your relatives ("Americans of Japanese descent"). Maybe I was misusing the term.... :)

I read that one of the other great idiocies of that issue was that, not only were most people in the camps like your relatives ("zero loyalty to Japan"), but that they were likewise considered traitors by the Japanese government itself for leaving Japan in the first place ("What? Japan's not good enough for you?"), so they would actually have been the perfect allies in fighting Japan.

I grew up in Indonesia and Singapore, so I have a special dislike of the term "asian." Not just because Indians, Arabs and even most Russians are technically "asian," but because I know the differences between Malays, Chinese, Koreans, and the Japanese. Lumping them all together with such a catch-all as "asian" completely ignores the historical alliances and animosities among these different peoples. You can imagine, then, how much I detest someone like Malkin who hides behind such a term to engage in the most vile type of racial bigotry. (I mean, come on! She's defending putting people of a certain ethnicity into camps!)

They simply said that they were getting rid of her because she was too anti-liberal. They failed to mention the fact that she is a complete wacko nutjob who cheerfully endorses concentration camps. Nope, didn't mention that she repeatedly defends the imprisonment of Japanese-Americans in WWII or the concept of creating Muslim camps. The paper has gotten dozens of letters (which they have been printing) complaining that they are too liberal and that they should drop Maureen Dowd as well to balance the "kooky factor."

If they had come right out and pointed those things out, the letters may not have been so harsh. But with the high military presence and the added joy of Pat Robertson breathing down our necks here, people would probably applaud the vapid twit.

Thank the gods they don't run anything by Man Coulter. Bad enough that Malkin and Safire are spouting off their BS all the time.
