Santorum told kids ineligible for school
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04323/413675.stm

U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said last night that he and his wife, Karen, are withdrawing their five school-age children from the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School.

Santorum has come under criticism from officials in Penn Hills, where he owns a house, who say the school district should not have to foot the $38,000 annual bill to educate his children.

The Santorums do not live in the district full-time and spends most of their time in Leesburg, Va., outside Washington, D.C.

"The school district has just informed us that after reviewing our situation, only children who live in a community on a full-time basis are eligible to be educated in a public cyber charter school program," Santorum said.

Mods forgive me for posting this first in GD Politics - after midnite bleary eyes.

which I'm sure he saved on his tax bill from the last several years.

He's nothing but a leech, a "welfare queen" with his Cadillac education for his kids, a drain on society, an elite gaming the system, a stealer of tax payer dollars, a deficit-hiker ...by God, the bastard's a socialist!!
Next thing you know he'll be hiring a trial attorney to get this thing fixed!

21. Tell Me About It
I'm a PA tax payer and I don't see why MY tax dollars have to go to educate all the children it was his choice to bring into the world. Where's the personal responsibility? If he couldn't afford to educate his kids he shouldn't have had them. Sheesh, welfare queen is right.

11/16/04 - Rooney Demands Refund For Santorum's Cyber School Costs

PA Dem Chair Says Santorum “Robbing Pennsylvania Students” for Personal Gain

HARRISBURG, PA: After days of news reports detailing how Senator Rick Santorum has taken $100,000 in Pennsylvania taxpayer dollars for cyber-schooling his children, Rep. T.J. Rooney, Chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, today called on Santorum to refund Pennsylvania's children the taxpayer dollars he has taken from their education to put towards the education of his own children.

Santorum and his family live in Virginia.

Rooney said today, “Senator Santorum keeps going around trumpeting family values, trying to convince citizens that he is the voice for the Pennsylvania family. Now we learn that apparently Mr. Santorum believes that family values means taking from the children who need our help to pay huge bills for his own family, even though they don't live in Pennsylvania.”

According to the Associated Press, the Penn Hills School District in suburban Pittsburgh has spent $100,000 on the Internet-based education of Santorum's children since 2001-2002. Santorum purchased his two bedroom residence in the school district in 1997 for $87,800. His Leesburg, Virginia home was assessed at $757,000 this year.

“This is a classic case of the rich man's Robin Hood,” Rooney followed. “Mr. Santorum makes a generous salary and lives in a very expensive home in Virginia, but he didn't let that stop him from unfairly taking from the Pennsylvania students who need those school funds desperately.”

10. From a Pittsburg paper, on Santorum's good eye for "bargains."
Compare that $2,000 tax bill to the estimated $38,000 that the district will shell out this year for five of Santorum's children to attend the Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, based in Beaver County.

That's a big windfall for the senator, paid for by the good citizens of Penn Hills -- even though the family spends most of its time in Herndon, Va.

In response to questions from the Progress, Santorum's office explained that he has to keep a residence in Washington to be available for official votes.

This is no doubt true, just as it was for former U.S. Rep. Doug Walgren when Santorum defeated him in 1990, in part by painting Walgren as a carpetbagger who lived outside of his home district.
(snip)

As it happens, this story fits right into a larger one playing out across the country. A very interesting map has shown up on the Internet. It shows how much the states pay in federal taxes compared to how much federal spending they consume. And guess what? The blue states that voted Democratic shoulder more of the burden while the red states that went Republican suck up most of the benefits.

You can check out the map at www.taxprof.typepad.com by typing "red states" into its search engine.

12. IMHO, the Penn Hills school district should expect a
full refund, plus interest.

Let's keep our eyes out for more carpetbagging.

For example, how many other legislators have their primary residence in the DC area, and really do not live in the state or district they represent? Should there be a requirement? Doesn't this begin to look like they feel they will always be re-elected?

Oh, yeah. The ReThugs probably all have Diebold stock. ... or perhaps Doiebold has stock in them?

29. Reed, Smith, Shaw & McClay ,locally known as Bleed, Shit, Stall & Delay
The lawyers at Reed Smith think they piss champagne! There's a true story about their representation of Duquesne Light, and a less influential resident of the same borough of Penn Hills. This goes back to the early 80's. Call it urban legend if you will, but I was told it by the court administrator who witnessed the final act.

There was a little old Italian lady who baked bread in her basement (lots of ethnic Pittsburgh homes have two kitchens - one on the main floor for show - always spotless - and the family kitchen in the basement where all the cooking and eating is done.) She had a couple of big ovens in her basement and every day baked bread for some local small grocery stores. One morning she put her loaves in to bake - goes back later and finds the ovens stone cold. Duquesne Light had taken their power source down to put in some new equipment, just for a couple of hours, but neglected to warn the residents in advance.

So the little old lady goes to Duquesne Light and asks them to reimburse her for for the cost of her ingredients & lost profits - a grand total of some $60. Duquesne says no and stubborn little old lady goes to Magistrate's court and sues. Reed Smith/Duquesne Light sends two lawyers (think their rate then was only $80 an hour-each) to the magistrate. Little old lady wins. Reed Smith/Duquesne appeal the decision to arbitration (panel of three lawyers sitting for the day as judges). Again, two lawyers from Reed Smith. Little old lady wins again. Now Reed Smith - Duquesne appeal again and demand a jury trial. They get to the call of the list for cases to be sent out for jury selection. Good old Judge McGowan looks over the history of the case, blows up at Reed Smith for trying to waste the court's time and orders them to pay her at once. So the good old boys at Duquesne Light paid many thousands of dollars (out of my & others' utility payments) to the good old boys at Reed Smith just to rip off the legal system and harass this poor woman for the fun of it. I'm sure they met to work on the case over lunch at the Duquesne Club or the HYP Club.

Santorum Says He will Home-School Children

Nov 18, 2004 9:23 am US/Eastern
Pittsburgh (AP) Sen. Rick Santorum and his wife will immediately begin home-schooling their five school-age children after they drew criticism from a school board member for sending them to an Internet-based school paid for by taxpayers.

<snip>

The Republican senator said the family will resume homeschooling the children. The change was first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Thursday.

Vecchio, who is also head of the local Democratic committee, said she was thrilled with the senator's decision, but still wants him to pay the district back.

"He's trying to say this is political. This is not political. This is a mother of three in a low-income school district,"
Vechhio said Thursday.

Santorum Comments on His Children’s Schooling Status

Contact: Christine Shott (202) 224-0610
Wednesday, November 17, 2004

Washington, D.C. - Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, issued the following statement regarding his children’s enrollment in The Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School:

“After home schooling our children for five years and annually submitting the voluminous documentation to the Penn Hills School District, we enrolled our children in a public charter school.

“With the approval of the Penn Hills School District, for four years my children attended The Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, while we split time between Pennsylvania and Washington.

“The school district has just informed us that after reviewing our situation, only children who live in a community on a full time basis are eligible to be educated in a public cyber charter school program.

“Karen and I believe it is important for our family to be with me when I am working in Washington; as I always say the most important job I have is as a husband and a father.

“As a result Karen and I have made the decision to immediately withdraw all five of our school-aged children from The Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School.

“We will now resume the practice of home schooling our children so that we can travel across Pennsylvania and continue to fulfill my pledge - that I have met every year - to visit each of Pennsylvania’s sixty-seven counties.

“Being able to experience public cyber education firsthand has been a tremendous experience for my family, and I believe that it could be an invaluable experience for many families in Pennsylvania.

“I want to thank the administration of the Penn Hills School District for the courtesy they extended to me during this time."

FOR BACKGROUND PURPOSES ONLY: Senator Santorum will continue to own a home, pay real estate and wage taxes to the school district and municipality of Penn Hills. By home schooling their children for five years prior to sending them to cyber charter school, the Santorums’ saved taxpayers in excess of $80,000 from 1996-2001.
