Just saw last Tuesday's Montel show - ACTION ALERT VOTING MACHINES >>>
Hi all - Many of us watched the Montel Williams show last Tuesday where they discussed Katrina, Iraq, healthcare, illegal wiretaps, etc., with guest Lou Dobbs and others. I had it Tivo'd and I just watched it. This "America Speaks Out" series will be every Tuesday. Since Montel is taking this on, I want all of us to contact his show about electronic voting machines. Send him this graphic:

I posted the Washington Post article discussing this here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=675690&mesg_id=675690

PLEASE contact Montel now about having that be a subject to discuss:

http://www.montelshow.com/sendyourpov/

Please also print that photo and hand it out at local meetings!

5. I just sent this:
I saw Tuesday's "America Speaks Out" show and wanted to first THANK YOU for doing that show and for your upcoming shows! I was extemely moved! Second, I hope you'll be discussing the security of our voting systems (or lack thereof). Please take a look at a recent Washington Post article about the fact that slot machines in Vegas are MORE SECURE than our voting machines! You can see the article here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/graphic/2006/03/16/GR2006031600213.html

Please show the graphic comparing security on your show and please have Steve Freeman on as a guest as well as Mark Crispin Miller. Thank you for what you're doing! You are a true patriot!

17. yep - I sent the article to everyone I knew and she responded. Maybe you
can help me out - do you know what percentage of voters voted on e-voting machines in the 2004 s"election"?

Here is the conversation (sans names)

Hi ,

I hadn't heard the number that actually implemented Touch Screens in 2004. I know California and New York didn't use them. I don't think Ohio did either because they were still considering RFPs. As I read about all the varous counties purchasing equipment during the oast year, I would be surprised if 1/3 of the nation actually used touchscreens in 2004. Do you know how we can find out?

Thanks,

Hi Clarity,

I will be interested to see what his report says. However, please keep in mind that most jurisdictions didn't have electronic voting machines in 2004.

Thanks,

26. Here:
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20040816/dugger
On November 2 millions of Americans will cast their votes for President in computerized voting systems that can be rigged by corporate or local-election insiders. Some 98 million citizens, five out of every six of the roughly 115 million who will go to the polls, will consign their votes into computers that unidentified computer programmers, working in the main for four private corporations and the officials of 10,500 election jurisdictions, could program to invisibly falsify the outcomes.

About a third of the votes, 36 million, will be tabulated completely inside the new paperless, direct-recording-electronic (DRE) voting systems, on which you vote directly on a touch-screen.

28. I did a google search for a third electronic voting machines and came up
with a couple more - all sent to her. I cannot believe given her position she hadn't heard this.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/10/26/evote/index.html

"About one third of U.S. voters will use some form of electronic balloting this general election. Some will replace the problem-prone punch cards that made Florida a laughingstock in 2000."

http://www.commoncause.org/site/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=228625

"The nation still has not fixed the machinery of voting. In the November 2004 election, about one-third of voters used electronic voting machines that have been shown to be unreliable and insecure. "

34. Another action item: Join the "I Count Coalition"
Ask Congress to Make Our Voting Machines Secure!

Come to Washington, D.C. on April 6 & 7
to Advocate for H.R. 550 and Voter Verified Paper Records!

H.R. 550, a bill introduced by Rep. Holt of New Jersey, would protect the integrity of our elections by requiring a voter verified paper record of every vote, requiring mandatory random hand counted audits to verify the accuracy of electronic tallies, and prohibiting the use of secret software and wireless communication devices in voting machines.

The recent change in leadership of the Committee on House Administration has created a new opportunity for passage of this vital election integrity measure. Previous constituent meetings in June and August of 2005 were a huge success, generating 24 new co-sponsors of the bill from both parties. Please join us in Washington, D.C. on April 6 and 7 to build even greater bipartisan support for this critical bill.

If you can't make it to Washington, D.C., you may still be able to help out in your home state.
