LETTER: Four House Dems ask for Ohio criminal investigation
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 03:15 PM by rawstory
Four Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee asked the Department of Justice to begin a criminal investigation into Ohio’s Republican Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell today, RAW STORY has learned. For the detailed story and background click here.

Among other matters, the referral is to request an investigation into voter intimidation, improper voter purging, perjury, possible misuse of Help America Vote Act funds, tampering with voting machines during Ohio’s recount and Blackwell’s misuse of the Great Seal of the United States in a campaign letter.

In the matter of misusing the Great Seal in violation of federal law, which was reported first by the Brad Blog earlier this week, the congressmen and women are seeking a special prosecutor.

4. And here's how you can help.
The extraordinary step of requesting a special prosecutor means that eventually, whatever the venue, Blackwell be investigated for his actions.

And how can you help? Get on the record yourselves. Contact the Republican leaders of House and the Senate and make your opinions known, in a polite and determined way!

I recommend that you write Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) and Senator Bill Frist (R-TN) requesting that they assist in the effort to determine whether criminal wrongdoing took place.

26. You're probably right, Twist_U_Up . . .
. . . but if we spread this kind of news all over Hell's half acre, they lose, no matter which way they respond (or don't). If they approve the plan, it might reflect better on them when the scheme is exposed and we get to watch those perp walks; but if they refuse, they just add another log on the fire as we get ready to roast them in 2006, if not sooner, for their un-American behavior. I'm all for closing in on them from all sides and making enough noise to catch the attention of the innocent (clueless?) bystanders.

27. twist_U-Up: taking to the streets...
500,000 people took to the streets in New York to stop the invasion of Iraq, and millions more around the US and the world. It had zero affect on BushCon policy. For a while I thought it might have helped reduce casualties, but the report that came out just before the election from British doctors said that our bombing killed AT LEAST 100,000 innocent people.

I'm not against street protests. I've done many myself, and completely endorse the coming DC protests. Street presence is vital. If nothing else, the big antiwar protests heartened people, and established that we are not alone, and there is great value also in merely bearing witness, no matter how big or small.

However, it does not move the BushCons (because they are a fascist coup--they do not have "consent of the governed," nor do they care), and it does not change the power situation in the government.

From what I can see, there is only one thing left that we can do, and it is vitally important: a state by state, county by county recovery of our right to vote. We need

a) paper ballots
b) hand counts

or at least

a) voter verified paper ballot for all electronic voting (and one that takes precedence over electronic tallies in any recount)
b) open source code in all electronic machines, including central tabulators

and c) honest exit polls to check for fraud (as is done everywhere else in the world.

There is a REASON that the BushCons stole our vote--because voting holds tremendous potential power. They can marginalize, and ridicule and ignore any size of protest. But they can't do that to a fair and honest election that throws them out of office.

I think we really, really need to focus peoples' attention on their loss of the right to vote, so that it can be remedied locally (Congress isn't going to do it!). Those who believe in peace, fairness and justice are the majority, but we have not been able to get our will enforced. If and when we ARE able to get our will enforced, we can transform this country very quickly.

Anyway, I'm not arguing with street protest; I'm arguing with saying that it is "the only thing that will fix" the BushCon coup. The BushCons can easily crush street protest, and would love to do it. But a widespread, decentralized, and highly focused effort, at the local level, to retrieve the election system will be much harder for them to prevent, and the direct power that it holds to evict them our government is considerable.

16. Thanks, this is good news. Too bad Ashcroft is the recipient!
I emailed everybody with this story. I have seen a little depression and helplessness creeping back in on those that thought it was all over on January 6. This ought to cheer a few of them up!
