I Believe
I believe that the power of the original "I Believe" thread(s) was something unique that had widespread implications.

Even while we are willing to let go of a set date and time, we're now finding ourselves in the glow of the Congressional challenge to the Ohio electors, an historic interruption of the ceremonial process for two hours to talk about broken elections. And recognizing the vast distance that has been covered in just the eight weeks since the election, I know this:

We still believe.

We believe that history will show that John Kerry received more votes in the election of 2004.

We believe that the forces of anti-democratic greed that made this travesty possible, along with the ones preceding it, have peaked in their power. Their crimes are coming to light. True democracy, America's greatest gift to itself and the world, will triumph.

We believe that Dr. Seuss was right: the last, smallest voice down in Whoville can make all the difference when it joins with the rest.

We believe, because we're lucky to know a few other people who also believe, and know that the right thing must be done.

This is dedicated to the difference that DU has made, to its incredible assortment of talented brains, and to Doohickie who started the first thread and really got us all wondering whether hope should be abandoned along with hard work. And we all thought about it, and some of us had to show up to say:

I Believe.

117. Patience
It took 2 years to topple Nixon, and his crimes were trivial compared to Bushit's. But in the long run, these crimes will topple many many Repugnicans, because their participation was widespread. They will be severely weakened, if not sent into obscurity with the Whigs and the Know-Nothings (the intellectual ancestor of today's Repug party).

Raised serious and grave concerns about the most fundamental issue to democracy the republicans answered with the mother of all flame wars.

I believe that my head is still swimming recognizing the facts of the matter: These assholes are on record with all the silly claims and flat out lies that are trivial to refute.

It's going to take me days to get through the CR and harvest the cherries :D

That's why I keep posting.

I believe that sooner rather than later, a tsunami of powerful circumstantial, statistical evidence will achieve the criical mass necessary to enlighten those who are now ignorant or in denial of the truth.

I believe the evidence is already clear and unambiguous.

I believe that whether third-grade arithmetic or Probability and Statistical Theory is applied to the data, the truth flows like clear spring water.

I believe democracy was scammed in this election.

I believe our heritage is on life-support right now.

42. Bleever, you are awesome. What a gifted orator you are. You
are wonderful with words. It's true what you say Bleever, we were lucky to have other believers who chose to band together here and collectively state our belief. And, Bleever, you are also right about the vast distance that has been covered in just 8 weeks.

Doohickie, a great big thank you for what you started way back when. Like Bleever says, your original thread was "powerful...with widespread implications..."

Still, I am having a hard time right now. I have been very firm and resolute in my belief since I joined DU a couple of weeks after the "election." Letting go of a set date and time is extremely difficult. I am torn now. While I do believe, eventually, history will show Kerry got more votes, I know that like other crimes against our nation history has a way of delaying the truth. Like someone I know who won a court case then had to appeal to get the monetary reward only to have the county delay the suit ever coming to trial.

Right now, I have no faith in my government. I have no faith in the media who could expose this sham for what it is which makes it a long shot for the crimes being brought to light. I don't know. I just don't know. I want to believe True Democracy will triumph, I want to believe in the smallest voice when combined with other voices will effect change, I want to believe. Right now, that's all I have, a desire to believe. It pains me that I am not more positive. My doubts trouble me. Sometimes I think we must doubt until we believe, I mean until we see...like the Doubting Thomas, you know.

I Believe that a civil war is brewing within the Republican Party

I Believe that John Kerry is in Iraq doing the job that ** can not do

I Believe that the truth about Ohio will be brought to light and that Kathy Blackwell will be left holding the bag

I Believe that the silent revolution has already begun. This new civil rights movement will grow exponentially as we become organized at the local level.

I Believe that in the end, good always defeats evil

44. So very true!
This is my first post in the "I believe" thread. I've been reading DU ever since November 2nd. I had so many doubts about the election results, and all of you kept me sane :). Seito, it's really true that you have to sometimes believe until you no longer doubt. Thanks to everyone here for helping me through a very difficult time. Here's something I've posted in other threads that I think applies:

"They hope you will just go away, they are COUNTING on it."

...John Kerry, in email to his supporters.

After voting for Wesley Clark in the primaries, I worked to support John Kerry in this election as I have never supported a candidate before, because after 2000, I knew the only way I could survive a similar result in 2004 was if I personally had done everything I could to prevent it. So I did. I think John Kerry did, too.

After November 2nd, while trying to understand what happened in this Presidential election, I started doing on-line research. Like many of you, I discovered the facts. I completely believe that Kerry won this election, and his actions from the beginning also show he knows it. I decided that my yard sign would stay until January 6th, when I would understand more about what had happened and could make a better decision about how to proceed. I decided my bumper sticker would stay there forever, because I want the world to know I didn't vote for this administration's planned policies (like changes to Social Security, pre-emptive war, etc.) John Kerry, in my opinion, would be an excellent president.

I watched Thursday's Electoral Vote challenge with great interest. On the positive side, I am thrilled that history was made, and that activists helped to promote that. While I was disappointed that Congressional Democrats did not vote for the challenge, I was, and am, so proud that they spoke in support of Election Reform, which should have happened after the 2000 Election. I am especially proud of Senator Barbara Boxer (from my home state of California) for being the senator to sign the challenge. Just the fact that there WAS a signed challenge this time, is a step toward the goal of fixing elections before 2008. On the negative side, we were mocked by Congressional Republicans...by both their words and actions. They don't want election reform, and I could see in their faces that they viewed this challenge as an annoyance and a joke. So the down side, for me, is I finally understand how hard this is going to be. I think John Kerry knew this from the beginning.

In John Kerry's email (way back in November) to his 3,000,000,000 on line supporters he included a videotape with the words, "They hope you will just go away...they are counting on it." When I first listened to his words, they seemed very "out-of-context" to me. I've listened to them several times since, and they fit the context of January, 2005 perfectly. While it was very disappointing to me that he seemed to be looking beyond Election 2004 and telling us (his base)what he wants us to do, after yesterday, I now see that he is right. We Democrats, liberal or moderate, are TOTALLY out of power. We have little say in Congress or in the courts, and no say in the executive branch. The only way we will be able to accomplish anything within this government, especially considering we have a broken election system, is if we do not just go away like the Republicans are counting on us to do. John Kerry said we must "stand firm" and he is right. In his most recent email to supporters (the one where he asked us to call Speaker Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Frist and then LET HIM KNOW WHEN WE HAD DONE SO ) Kerry has begun the fight. If we, his on line supporters, go away, Congressional Democrats will have even less success in this fight. I believe we must stay engaged and support John Kerry and Democrats (who spoke so eloquently Thursday) in their efforts.

I don't know who I'll vote for in 2008. I still think Wesley Clark is great. I like John Edwards' enthusiasm. If Al Gore ran again, I've always thought he would make a great president. Maybe John Kerry, with our support will yet surprise us all (I REALLY hope so!). But I do know I'll never vote for a Republican, and I do know I want my vote counted this time. I think Kerry IS still fighting for us and there IS something to hang on to. So no matter who I decide on for 2008, Kerry has my support until this election reform fight is won!

I BELIEVE!!!!!!!!

49. I dont know what to believe.
I found a link to this site (democraticunderground.com) at www.oreilly-sucks.com and have been lurking for a while. I am NOT one of those people who believes in many conspiracy theories, in fact I always thought it was those right wing Montana militia types who were into those things. I actually started posting earlier in the non-political boards, about books, another interest of mine. But anyways, I have tried to read about the fraud that occurred this election, and I am stunned really, I dont know what to believe.. Can this all be true? I mean, it is truly frightening. The proof seems to be there though, can the media be THAT bad? This would be one of the biggest stories in my lifetime, how can they miss this? I think the media is just LAZY AS HELL. And stupid too, most of them dont understand statistics.

I thought the exit poll stuff was fishy, I mean, since when EVER has a candidate thought he lost, and then turn around and win? Not in this modern era, I remember a few elections back when the networks would call a state after only a tiny percent of the vote had been counted. It was the accuracy of the exit polls, so this time, I was like, what the HELL is going on?

Then I come here and wham, I mean, I am stunned. Its like, the more I read, the more I realize that SOMETHING has gone wrong, I dont know what it is, but something IS JUST NOT RIGHT!

I dont think I would have EVER found out about this stuff going on if it wasnt for you democraticundergrounders, or whatever it is folks here are called. At this point, I am almost AFRAID TO BELIEVE, its so, shit, scary as hell, HOW CAN PEOPLE GET AWAY WITH THIS KIND OF STUFF! IN THIS COUNTRY, IN THIS DAY AND AGE?!?!!

Sorry for the rambling, its like, the light that has been shined is so bright, it is almost blinding, a smack in the face that shakes the foundation of everything I have believed.

53. first of all
i would like to welcome you to DU and as part of your orientation I suggest you arm yourself with WWW.planetsmilies.com.You may find them very useful.

secondly, I am glad to hear that your ears and eyes are open and you are trying to discover what may have happened on NOv2.This is exciting because we have had so many newbies joining for the same reason.

thirdly,Yes it is scary as shit to know that what people do to get elected or get their candidate elected.Although both dems and repukes have cheated in the passed, this is on a much larger scale(I have no tolerance for any cheating ,thus my name.)It kind of like if you don't believe in god it's a hell of alot scarier because you just die. That's it.It would be much easier on all of us if Bush had legitamately been elected (not that I want him in),then we would not have to go through all of this hard work and also think our democracy is dead and we are trying to revive it.

welcome!

55. Believing IS scary
I think that's why it's makes such a strong statement to say "out loud" that you believe, even if you're not sure you believe 100%.

If we believe what our eyes seem to be telling us, what the facts seem to be telling us, we have to believe that we, as a citizens of this country (even the freepers, though they'll never realize it) are in grave danger.

It's so much easier to dismiss the gravity of the situation, or say that hope is already lost and so there's nothing that can be done, or to start placing blame on our allies, because human failure is easier to swallow than acknowledging that we have such a determined enemy. To believe that this fraud happened means believing we have work to do, and that it's going to be "hard work."

I had never gone to a rally or protest in my life before this election. I'd never really donated anything to a political cause. I figured there were enough people mobilized that these things were kept in check, and my support from the "audience" was enough. Now I know that it's up to me, and other people like the believers in this thread and elsewhere on DU, to keep fighting, no matter how long it takes.

I firmly believe that we believed hard enough to get Boxer to take her stand, and that our continued act of believing will see more "impossible" things happen. The spirt of our belief is indomitable.

Welcome to DU, NE. :hi:

BRILLIANT!!

I believe we grow stronger every day.

I believe this administration will self-destruct and very soon.

I believe it's only a matter of time until Junior no longer matters, at all. (Crawford better get crackin' on those 'Welcome Home/Retirement' party arrangements. )

I believe our true President-Elect is doing an excellent job representing us in person in the Middle East.

Never give up. Never surrender.

89. I Believe!
Been in a cave
For forty days
Only a spark
To light my way
I wanna give out
I wanna give in
This is our crime
This is our sin

But I still believe
I still believe
Through the pain
And the grief
Through the lies
Through the storms
Through the cries
And through the wars
Oh, I still believe

Flat on my back
Out a sea
Hopin’ these waves
Don’t cover me
I’m turned and tossed
Upon the waves
When the darkness comes
I feel the grave

But I still believe
I still believe
Through the cold
And the heat
Through the pain
And through the tears
Through the crowds
And through the cheers
Oh, I still believe

I’ll march this road
I’ll climb this hill
Down on my knees if I have to
I’ll take my place
Up on this stage
I’ll wait ’til the end of time
For you like everybody else
I’m out on my own
Walkin’ the streets
Look at the faces
That I meet
I feel like I like I want to go home
What do I feel
What do I know

But I still believe
I still believe
Through the shame
And through the grief
Through the heartache
Through the years
Through the waiting
Through the years

For people like us
In places like this
We need all the hope
That we can get
Oh, I still believe

94. Another response
Defy the lie. What may come true is not known though some things ARE predictable.

Between those who defy the lie and believe every small victory will lead to triumph is the implacable dominance of truth. I always said that the other side, int their grand schemes and false ideas cannot win. They MAY make us all lose. We certainly are losing now, lives resources, rights, chunks of the future. Certainly Bush believes Armageddon is win/win for him too ultimately and no suffering or failure is too much for others to bear.

Waiting until THAT lie is proven on a silent planet demands more than belief. It demands instinctual resistance and intellectual responsibility for the gifts and duties we possess together.

Remember the Alamo. That may have been dumb optimism too until it was too late, but someone somewhere is going to keep fighting until victory is achieved for humanity. This is life against death and lies.

102. Surely the evidence of the widespread fraud, dirty tricks, and suppression
will only grow and become a cancer on his presidency, if it isn't used to set the results right now.

There was widespread and systematic voter suppression of minority voters, dirty tricks, vote machine fraud, and other vote manipulation in Ohio, New Mexico, and Florida- that was of magnitude enough to call in question who won those states.

etc.

and also similar patterns in other states where the suppression and fraud did not change the election results including vote machine fraud in Calif., Pennsylvania, Washington, Texas, etc.
http://www.flcv.com/orangets.html
http://www.flcv.com/snohomis.html
http://www.flcv.com/mercerco.html

etc.

(the voter suppression of minorities in Mercer County is the worst I've ever seen-followup needed)

The unethical and illegal actions were so systematic and widespread that this cannot be allowed to continue uninvestigated and unpunished. There was a huge amount of obvious malfeasance and dirty tricks that should be investigated and dealt with

108. The report the Gore won was released on Sept. 12, 2001 and was
buried in the newspaper in a tiny little two sentence blip, in teh St. Petersburg Times in Fla! No matter how they reported it, even if it was a splash, no one would have been receptive. It was the day after 9/11....that is why is was released in fla on that day. Sinister.

Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 11:29 AM by McCamy Taylor
From "Easter 1916" by W B Yeats

"I number him in the song;

He, too, has resigned his part

In the casual comedy;

He, too, has been changed in his turn,

Transformed utterly:

A terrible beauty is born."

"Hearts with one purpose alone

Through summer and winter seem

Enchanted to a stone

To trouble the living stream...

Too long a sacrifice

Can make a stone of the heart.

O when may it suffice?

That is Heaven's part, our part

To murmur name upon name,

As a mother names her child

When sleep at last has come..."

151. I believe
that 50 believers have chimed in on this page so far (one or two might have been nonbelievers, I wasn't sure).

50 BELIEVERS.

That may not be a lot in the grand scheme of things, but given the slings and arrows we have to dodge, I think it's a pretty impressive show of belief for our little "room."

Thank you all for continuing to believe and for kicking this thread. Some days it's the only positive thing I read, and I always check for it when I'm about to give in and give up and go home. As long as I can still see it, as long as "that star-spangled banner yet waves," I continue to believe in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Did you know that the search is now over for WMD's?

And in Louisiana a National Guard Unit chose to honor six of their fallen soldiers by having a public ceremony, when the flag-draped coffins were carried from the plane...and this was against Pentagon wishes.

I believe more and more of us will be standing up against this administration. I believe in the power of democracy.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) was not only kicked from chairing the veterans affairs committee but was also removed from the committee because he wouldn't accept gutting veteran benefits.

Veteran groups are outraged! He has a proven track record for over 24 years for fighting for veterans. This move not only alienated the country’s powerful veterans organizations but also 26 million veterans and their families.

179. I BELIEVE...
That William Blake is the greatest mind the west has ever produced!

from THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN AND HELL by William Blake

"Isaiah answered: 'I saw no God, nor heard any, in a finite organical perception; but my senses discovered the infinite in everything, and as I was then persuaded, & remain confirmed, that the voice of honest indignation is the voice of God, I cared not for consequences, but wrote.'

"Then I asked: 'Does a firm persuasion that a thing is so make it so?'

"He replied: "All poets believe that it does, & and in ages of imagination this firm persuasion removed mountains; but many are not capable of firm persuasion of anything.'"

Sorry so slow. I was playing with the emoticons :-).

Ya know, I don't hate them. I hate what they are doing.

The tragedy is, they will probably hide the fear from themselves till the day they die; we already see it.

Thank you for the welcomes and the agreement, gkhouston and Patsy. It's good to be here. Good people doing good things -- even out in the more contentious threads :-) An oasis of sanity.

See ya all around. Thanks again.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate
cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate,
violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a
descending spiral of destruction....The chain reaction of evil--hate
begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall
be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation."

that was not the point. For me it was about "election fraud". I am pleased the way Kerry handled the whole thing. I think he will continue to be a rising star and fight for the people. I am grateful that Conyers, and Boxer did their thing, and will continue to so do with help of other legislators.
I am just so shocked that the general American public is so uninvolved and doesn't seem to give a rat's *** about what happened in Ohio and what's going on everyday with the Bush* administration! Yeah yeah the approval rates are down, big deal!!! Millions aren't marching! I didn't live in the US in the 60's but lived in Europe (where I grew up)and there were massive protests all the time against Vietnam etc.!

213. I believe
that Blackwell will fold under pressure. He doesn't have Oliver North's composure under fire. (Remember the SNL skit with Shatner as "the mute Marine?" Ah, that was funny.)

Grab some popcorn, kiddies; it's going to be a seven-reel serial. First, we get to see the back-and-forth over whether the DOJ will actually appoint a prosecutor. That could happen if enough public pressure is brought to bear ("Why haven't they appointed a special prosecutor? What are they afraid they'll discover?") Then we get to watch some more back-and-fill maneuvering from our favorite song-and-dance man, complete with those inspiring and informative press releases from Carlo "no relation whatsoever to Baghdad Bob" LoParo. All of that before Blackwell even testifies.

And the actual testimony! All bets are off. I wouldn't be surprised if he's initially quite pompous and evasive, and then crumbles as he realizes that his bullshit excuses just aren't going to fly in this venue. He'll probably end up contradicting himself and try to shift most of the blame to others once he's been backed into a corner. By this point, he may well have convinced himself that he's an innocent/injured party, and he'll come across as a puppy trying to convince you that he really has no connection whatsoever to that large puddle in the living room. He's been *good* for the state of Ohio, really he has, and none of this was his idea, he was just following orders. He was an impressionable young girl... you get the idea. Man, a Blackwell "apology" would be a dead cert for the Countdown apology hall of fame... and I sure hope Prince Harry coughs up an "apology" before the 20th. I'd dearly love for KO to have an excuse to run the apology hall of fame, with the Nixon impeachment stuff, on Inauguration Day!

227. MORE GOOD NEWS From Georgia
I read your optimism with great interest.

You see, we have something much better in GA than ohio. We have the very detailed grounds for a comprehensive fraud argument. Events such as stolen Diebold equipment that makes a case for an 'invalidated election'. This weekend, We started a group of citizens sending Open Records request to Diebold, Cathy Cox / Sec. of State's office and Kennesaw State University who are the central 'ministry of information' and party to the ongoing / systemmatic outsourcing of our votes to Diebold.

We've started average / everyday citizens sending letters to ask the question, why can't I get access to this data? What are you hiding, Diebold, Cathy Cox, KSU , etc. YOU WON"T BELIEVE I'm having to fight my own democratic party, would not let us speak at a meetup on this issue.

It's got more than a few court clerks nervous and some county attorneys playing cover their you know what.... I wish I could share more, but look on www.countpaperballots.com this week for more info. There's more than enough data in Georgia to sink the Bush ship and take criminal proceedings with it....!! Keep up the faith, keep posting your I BELIEVE. Know that this one soldier has already lost her job proving that there is something fishy in this peach of state.. it's time to march on ALL our capitols and demand we retract every single solitary machine that has stolen our votes from us....

soon, soon enough superior court judges will help me shine light on the very very very fishy events of Georgia's elections.. patience and persistence.. it's a battle of tiny baby steps.. but done methodically, can catch them in the very act of covering up the fraud they so blatantly committed...

For those who want to help send an email to [email protected] there are letters that I will forward where all you have to do is sign them and mail them to the people in the letter..... it has to be a torrent of citizens asking WHY ! WHY ! WHY! It's time to hold people accountable.. it's time...

233. What Kerry should have believed:
"I belive progress is a value."
"I believe it doesn't matter if you get a tax cut and then lose your job."
"I believe abortions aren't a good thing, but I'd never presume to tell a woman what to do with her own body."
"I believe the most important family value is that you don't tell anyone else what their family should believe."
"I believe that the War on Terror can be won, that it doesn't have to go on indefinitely, and, most importantly, that our country is about far more than war."
"I believe that the American Dream can be possible for far more people without coming at the expense of anyone."

I wish my candidate would have said just one of these things.

That this is only the beginning of our fight:
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050117/ap_on_re_us/mlk_day_kerry

I believe that you have to believe even if you don't know why you believe.

I was doing some surfing and I came across this interesting site: http://www.edge.org/questioncenter.html As you can see, the question for 2005 is: "What do you believe is true, even though you cannot prove it?" There are some fascinating theories, but I liked this one (I've snipped, but you can go read the whole thing yourself, if you so desire.):

RANDOLPH NESSE, M.D.
Psychiatrist, University of Michigan; Coauthor, Why We Get Sick

"I can't prove it, but I am pretty sure that people gain a selective advantage from believing in things they can't prove. I am dead serious about this. People who are sometimes consumed by false beliefs do better than those who insist on evidence before they believe and act. People who are sometimes swept away by emotions do better in life than those who calculate every move. These advantages have, I believe, shaped mental capacities for intense emotion and passionate beliefs because they give a selective advantage in certain situations."

"It is harder to explain the disadvantages suffered by people who lack a capacity for faith, but consider the outcomes for those who wait for proof before acting, compared to the those who act on confident conviction. The great things in life are done by people who go ahead when it seems senseless to others. Usually they fail, but sometimes they succeed."

I Believe. :hi:

...as a believer was Kerry banter prior to his questions to Condi Rice today (great questions!). The banter concerned that he was back there in the Senate and he said "too bad that I did not get enough votes." Or something along those lines... not an exact quote.

CORRECTION, John, you got enough votes. They just weren't counted.

Great questions, appreciate his intelligence and debate skills, awesome, but he lost me there. Does he really care about the SCALE of the disenfranchisement that occurred on 11/2/2004? If so, how can he say that he did not get enough votes?

We all know he won. We all know there was fraud. But for him to even suggest that in the Senate today would have been total suicide, undermining all the good he was able to do by raking Condi over the coals.

So you're saying that if someone is defrauded and can't prove it and thus plays by the rules he never deserves your vote again even though he's doing good by you otherwise?

Methinks he doesn't need super simian's fickle vote.

252. How dare you call me fickle?
That is uncalled for. You don't know the first thing about me.

257. I Believe,
beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I stand with what is right and fair and just. I am so proud to stand with each and every one of you.

Together, we are going to change history.

I am so proud to be a Democrat. I expect great things from Senators Kerry and Boxer. I believe that they will continue to be thorns in the side of this administration. With our help, their numbers will grow until we have a true opposition party.

In the past two months, we have seen the fruits of our labors in the hands of real American patriots. I want to honor the Congressional Democrats that stood on Nov 6th for Democracy. These individuals carry the torch. It may flicker and dim, but as long as we provide the fuel, the torch will never go out.

WE ARE THE OPPOSITION. WE ARE AMERICA. As long as we continue to believe, we will effect change. First you visualize, then you achieve.

I BELIEVE

255. I believe.
I believe John Kerry is the true patriot and statesman I have always felt him to be. I believe that today is only the beginning of his fighting hard for us in the Senate and for democracy.

I believe that the * crime family will eventually be exposed and fall from their stolen postitions of power. I believe that we must work together with all of our hearts and souls to make it happen.

I believe.

261. I see Belief changing reality
Anyone else? I'm getting a really good feeling. I believe more today than I did the day before. Change is happening. Wheels are moving. I see cracks in the spackling.

THEY ARE GOING DOWN and we are making it happen. I firmly believe this!

265. I believe
with each passing day, the cracks in *'s mask grow larger. The amount of security and the number of protestors present yesterday show that his control of the situation is slipping. I, too, believe justice will be served. The mills of the Gods...
