Apply for Camp Katrina Chief Activist Job - $15/hr. Make history.
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 02:54 PM by GeorgeBushytail
Camp Katrina on The Mall will be a historic event.

I am looking for someone to spearhead the effort to make Camp
Katrina a reality. I will pay $15/hr for 20 hours to a person with
the passion and energy to do the job - $300 total for now.

This job will become a long-time position, as the Chief Activist
will also fundraise. I have already had offers on DU to donate to
Camp Katrina.

I need help to push this idea. I am disabled and my energy is
limited.

The person for this position must:
- Understand intuitively what is meant by "Camp Katrina on The Mall".
- Have the passion and energy to make Camp Katrina real.
- Have time RIGHT NOW to do the work necessary.
- Be creative.
- Be familiar with the history of Mall protest encampments. Google
for Hooverville and "Dewey Canyon III" to learn now.
- Be willing to be hated. Think Cindy and Camp Casey.
- Realize that this effort is a catalyst. Ultimately the energy and
power behind Camp Katrina must come from Katrina survivors wanting
to express their anger and demand change.
- Have some web expertise.
- Be good at getting people to work for free.
- Be willing to abandon the idea if it becomes apparent it has no chance of success.
- Ideally but not necessarily - be connected to other effective
activists.

Please reply to this post to apply. Write a few short paragraphs expressing your vision of Camp Katrina and explaining why you should spearhead the effort to make it happen.

I will make my decision as soon as I can, hopefully by the end of
today - 9/4/05.

I urge all of you to volunteer for this effort. We can change history. We can be instrumental in driving Bush's criminal bastard bunglers out of office.
I am just planting a seed. I am a disabled keyboard activist. Camp Katrina may be my proudest memory.

Apply for the job at:

35. We have a new Chief Activist for Camp Katrina
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 01:26 PM by GeorgeBushytail
She is one of ours and I will let her introduce herself tonight.

Today she is going to a shelter where 1,000's of survivors have been relocated. If the idea catches fire in conversations with survivors, then we will proceed.

Tomorrow she will set up a PayPal account and I will hound DU mercilessly for donations. This is a seed fund to spread the idea.

If it is to succeed Camp Katrina will be run by survivors.

I would love to see thousands of Katrina survivors in Bush's face until he is driven from the White House. They will be in the seat of government and media. They will be angry. They will demand answers and change. They will have lots of time to dedicate to the cause of justice. They will be there during 9/11, during the SCOTUS hearings, during the Katrina politcal aftermath, during the 9/24 peace march.

I feel that a big weight is off my shoulders and that the right person is spearheading the project.

Visit our Camp Katrina forum on Yahoo:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/campkatrina /

Now off to canoe on a beautiful Wisconsin lake.

3. It would be great if a survivor of the disaster could take the job
Not only would their voice be heard with the most sincerity (like Cindy), but someone who survived could really use the job.

4. This isn't the time
I think they need to have a seperate message than Cindy's, and I would hate for this to turn into an exploitation of these people's misery. Some of them haven't even had to time to find their family members who have been displaced all over the country.
Let something like this be THEIR idea and then help them if it comes to that. Please don't use them for pawns. They've been used enough.

7. This is exploratory. If it's a bad idea it will fizzle out.
If it is a good idea the time to act is now.

and politically it would be awesome for us. But it's not about us, it's about them.
I just don't want the smear machine going after these people and hurting them more than they have been hurt. :(

19. Then don't call it "Camp Katrina"
that is an attempt to use the success of Camp Casey and it dilutes both messages. By glomming on this meme--you are going to start seeing stuff like "Camp Fetus", "Camp Terri Schiavo", et al from the other side.
Make your message separate. Make your slogan separate. Make it a unique idea.

24. I think I agree with you on that point "Camp Katrina" may be a bad
for the reasons you stated and Katrina only part of the problem, FEMA, lack of prepardness, played a significant role in this tragedy.

28. "Camp Katrina" is just a placeholder name
I am planting this seed of an idea. Camp Katrina is good shorthand name for now while we are exploring whether this idea is a good one.

If it flies the people who run it will decide the name.

I rather like memorial; imagine 10,000 crosses or however many are needed to commemmorate those killed on Bush's watch.

That was uncalled for and you know it.
I just don't believe in using these people as pawns to further a political goal, and YES, Cindy Sheehan HAS been attacked unmercifully.
But she was at the point in her grief that she could handle it.
These people are not.

thoughts about this issue in comparing situations. Not name calling. It isn't like this is going to happen next week. And some people who lost loved ones and are experiencing grief may feel this is a therapeutic outlet to express their feelings. They may also feel a sense of duty to this country to warn of the incompentence of FEMA and DHS and others, it is still Hurricane season and people are still at risk.

22. No--you didn't call me a name but you insinuated that I am an apologist
and accomplice for those swift boat assholes.
All in all-I'd rather be called an ass--TYVM.
In 20 days, you want to go to Washington--rounding up thousands of these people who most likely will still be in long-term shelters, and expect them to go up against a highly oiled smear machine so that we can get George Bush out of office.
I'm sorry--I think telling their story is sufficient for right now,
UNLESS THEY ORGANIZE and need help, I think everyone else should stay out of it, because then it is policitizing their tragedy in a way that is unforgivable.
There is enough failure of the government to act on without propping these people up in Washington as poster children.

15. I got a suggestion..
To demonstrate to people just the kind of situation people lived through in NOLA..

The filthy water dunk.

Fill up a pool with filthy water put fake body parts in it,make it FOUL
and ask people to dare to step in up to thier chests toexperince the fetid waters of Katerina at New Orleans.
And tell them thousands of people swam in it for hours days and died there. While bush played guitar and ate birthday cake.

Sit-ins/camp-ins are an age-old device for any movement. This will merely further show the groundswell of opposition to this political monster.

23. Camp Katrina - Ideas
- Focus on establishing a foundation to enable the evacuees to restablish their lives

- Focus on establishing a foundation for therapy for the evacuees.

- Focus on ending racism.

- Focus on ending the disparities in class.

- Focus on Democrats are for ALL walks of life, ALL races, ALL religions, ALL sexes, etc.

- Focus on the Democrats CARING AND WANTING TO HELP and the Republican lack of action.

If this is set up with valid, tangible outcomes, it could be a very good success.

I am wondering if Sherole Eaton would be interested as she is out of work and is scheduled to speak before the Black Caucus in Washington just before the 24th rally. But, I also think the person hired should be an evacuee.
