The human drive for freedom wins - Kevin Rudd

FOR decades, Libya has been a tragedy. It has been a brutal dictatorship, a people suppressed and a nation alienated from the wider international community.

Now, there is an opportunity for a new Libya.

Muammar Gaddafi's tyranny lasted 42 years. In that time, Gaddafi's regime sponsored terrorism, amassed weapons of mass destruction and committed grave human rights abuses.

Woken from their nightmare, the Libyan people now have a chance to realise their aspirations. This is the start of a journey which will require equal amounts of patience and determination.

On Thursday, I will travel to Libya to meet with the new interim government.
