...which is the example most relevant to the OP, I think.

on edit - the most immediate real change following that was the compromise that extended the bush tax cuts, which was unthinkable just a few months before. I know every thinks now that was all Obama - they forget the "GOP mandate" of the a nation of people could decide to give a majority to asshats promising little but low taxes for the rich is beyond me, but I'd look at the next elections to see whether anything is going to change.
