...free-floating damn-the-consequences anger, people who would have been happy for millions of people to suffer so long as the bastards at the top suffered too.

I like what Barney Frank has to say about this. People quite often accept the idea of "collateral damage" in war, that innocents will be hurt, but that a greater good excuses that harm, yet strangely people have a harder time accepting "collateral benefit", the idea of people who don't deserve a benefit getting a huge benefit in the process of doing modest good for a lot more people.
