Poll question: What Do You Think?

US Foreign policy over the past six or seven decades has involved support for Dictators from Latin America to the ME and elsewhere where we 'have interests'.

Eg, up to the beginning of the Arab Spring early this year, Mubarak and Ben Ali were 'close allies and friends' of the US.

Saudi Arabia is one of our top allies and Karamov of Uzbekistan receives our support both financially and diplomatically, despite the brutality of his regime.

We have a long, long list of allies around the globe, who are corrupt, brutal and in many cases, war criminals. As a result of that support, untold numbers of people around the globe have suffered death and torture and oppression.

We have few allies who are democratically elected outside of the West, and have been known up to as recently as the Venezuelan, Haittian and Honduran coups, to back coups against those left-leaning and/or socialist leaders chosen by their own people.

Our Western Allies, former Colonialists such as France, Britain et al are generally supportive of these policies also.



And, when those dictators stop cooperating with us we go to war with them, as in Iraq and now Libya eg often helping to install in their place, puppet governments, as in Iraq who continue to oppress their own people, as is still happening in Iraq.

My question is, were these policies wrong and could we have been a better World had we supported democratically elected leaders?
