Much of Montpelier underwater

Montpelier, Vermont - May 27, 2011

The Capitol City appears to have capsized. Thursday night storms wreaked havoc in the downtown and residential areas.

"A firefighter pulled up outside of the house and said if you can get out, get out," said Mattia Kind of Montpelier.

Montpelier residents took shelter in the National Life building, waiting for the storm to pass. But officials say there is no telling when it will be safe to return home.

"We have evacuated everything from downtown. From Spring Street to the whole downtown area," Montpelier City Police Sgt. Richard Cleveland said. "It went very well. We started that early this morning. Got people up to National Life. They have been very cooperative. Now we are just waiting for the next wave of storms to come in."

A few roads remain clear and business owners are being allowed back in to save what they can from the rising water.
