Teens hailed for march for peace

By Dianna M. Náñez / Arizona Republic

Gilbert teens marching for peace did not expect the flood of support they got Saturday from hundreds of passers-by who flashed peace signs and blasted car horns in response to the group's "Honk for Peace" signs.

In a town known for its conservatism, 17-year-old Laura Henriksen admitted that she and her friend Norman Woolsey, 17, prepared for confrontations.

"We worried about . . . being persecuted by someone stopping their car, but this is our home, this is where we live, and this is where we need to make our stand for peace," Henriksen said.

Support came locally as well from a group of about 300 parents, teens and veteran war protesters who marched Saturday morning from Sen. Jon Kyl's office to Sen. John McCain's office in Phoenix.

While the teens' rally drew less numbers than their counterparts', they said they think their cause made no less of an impact at time when the human cost of war is mounting.

"This is a sign that a growing number of people are fed up," Henriksen said. "People might say it's (marching) inconsequential, but a small group of determined people doing determined things spreads. That's how change is made."
