Has anyone ever applied for FEMA disaster money?

I am wondering if anyone has ever applied for FEMA disaster assistance, and what
the experience was like? Do you have any tips for others who might go through this
process?

We experienced flooding in Iowa, and President Obama just declared my county a national
disaster area. That means we are eligible for FEMA money for damaged property.

We got water in our basement, and lost carpeting, furniture and we're now tearing out
dry wall-as the water seeped from the floor into the walls.

I just registered with FEMA today, and they're supposed to follow up with a phone call
within two weeks.

I'm just wondering what to expect and if anyone has helpful hints or tips that anyone
in general, should know about this process.
