Most of the wealthy in Venezuela are the descendants of Spanish imperial forces that grew to wealth on the backs of indigenous people.

Chavez represents the indigenous people trying to restore a balance of power. People with power and influence will not give it up unless under the fear of force. Chavez isn't so much trying so much to lower the ceiling as to raise the floor. Unfortunately, the oligarchs don't understand that it isn't a matter of taking all they own but just offering a livable income for those that were repressed for so long.
