I saw this happen when the weak Shannon O'Brien lost the governorship to Mitt Romney.

Massachusettsans always like to balance their all-Dem legislature (which doesn't make it liberal) and all-Dem Congressional delegation with a Republican in high office. They've always made that office the governor's (Celluci, Romney). But for the first time since 1986, they have a Dem governor, too. So they sent the senate seat of Teddy Kennedy, which hadn't been open for 47 years, to a Republican. Stupid, but not surprising.
