Is capitalism just one more way to screw us?

In truth, I don’t see that there’s much wrong with capitalism, assuming it was actually regulated and the rules were enforced with strict oversight. But we all know that ain’t ever going to happen.

Capitalism seemed to work in this country from about the end of WWII to the beginning of the Reagan years – a span of about 35 years. Before and after those 35 years, capitalism was just one more way to screw the majority of the population out of their money, homes, belongings and the right to live a decent existence. Today, the middle class is well on the way to becoming extinct.

So what’s the alternative? Fascism? Communism? A benevolent dictatorship? I don’t think so. History has proved that these are just various forms of enslavement.

How about a European form of socialism? Most Europeans seem to be doing fairly well under it. But I doubt it would work here. Thanks to America’s lunatic fringe, the term “socialism” has been turned into a dirty word. And even if we did adapt the European model, does anyone really believe America’s wingnuts would play by the rules?

I truly believe that America is in a steep decline. And perhaps this is for the best. Maybe, once we’ve hit bottom, we’ll actually throw out the corporate pigs that own us and come up with a saner, more equitable system.
