Bush Scores in Football Speech just Hours after Fumbling Iraq Address. How Appropriate!

George W. Bush would make a horrible poker player: you can read the guy like a book. His composure during speeches betrays precisely what he is thinking (or, in most cases, not thinking).

Just hours after Bush ominously announced the dark days ahead in Iraq on Monday, he was partying it up with the NCAA champion Florida Gators football team on the White House lawn.

The contrast between his two speeches was striking. Granted, the topics were radically different and we recognize the ceremonial role of the president. But the difference in his appearance went beyond mere demeanor.

In his Iraq speech, Bush had a look of bewilderment. His trademark squinted eyes solidified the confused expression encompassing his face. He swayed several feet to either side every few moments, forcing the camera to follow back and forth with motion sickness-inducing loyalty (as if the words were not nauseating enough).

Bush's voice also revealed his discomfort. The stammering has gotten better, but his pitch, inflection, and pace varied awkwardly. After six years talking in front of the world, he still cannot help but remain absolutely terrified when saying things he does not really believe or understand.

Hey, we get pretty scared, too.
